Popular ice cream maker recalls nearly 70 flavors and treats over listeria concerns

A popular ice cream maker is recalling nearly 70 flavors and cold treats after finding they may be contaminated with listeria.

Totally Cool, a Maryland-based company that makes popular sweets like ChipWich cookie sandwiches and Friendly’s ice cream cakes, recalled more than 60 products across several brands in a June 24 notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

Though no illnesses related to the consumption of the ice cream have been reported, Totally Cool has ceased production and distribution of the affected products after FDA sampling discovered the presence of listeria.

The bacteria can cause fever, flu-like symptoms, headaches, fatigue, confusion, and even seizures. It’s most likely to sicken adults 65 and older, pregnant women, newborns and those with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.

Pregnant women must be extra careful as they are at high risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and life-threatening infections of their babies from listeria.

The frozen treats were distributed across the country to local retailers and via direct delivery.

Customers who purchased any of the products on the recall list should return it to the store where they bought it for a full refund, Totally Cool said in its recall notice.
