Why the bullpen is the Yankees’ biggest trade deadline need — and who they could target

The calendar flipped to July on Monday, which means trading season is just about here.

Since the MLB draft moved to July, teams typically have waited for that to finish — it takes place on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of the All-Star break — before shifting their full focus to the trade market. And even then, most deals seem to come in the final 48-72 hours before the deadline, which this year is at 6 p.m. ET on July 30.

The Yankees will be in Philadelphia that day, in the midst of a three-game series against the National League’s best team. If they hope to see the Phillies in October, they may need some help getting there via the trade market.

The biggest need that has emerged for the Yankees over the first three months of the season is in the bullpen. Clay Holmes has been mostly steady at closer, Luke Weaver and Michael Tonkin have been nice surprises who have worked their way into high-leverage spots (particularly Weaver) and Tommy Kahnle has started to look more like himself over the past few weeks.
