July 4th fireworks mishaps in NY end with man losing 3 fingers, 11-year-old boy setting fire to 2 houses: cops

Fireworks mishaps blew up across Long Island on the Fourth of July — causing one man to lose three of his fingers and an 11-year-old boy to set fire to two houses, authorities said.

An 8-year-old girl also suffered minor injuries when a firework went astray during a gathering outside a home on Foxrun Court in Port Jefferson around 10 p.m. Thursday, Suffolk County Police said. 

Three others were also injured in the blunder — including a 30-year-old Selden man who lost one of his fingers and a 38-year-old Mount Sinai man who suffered a serious leg injury, according to authorities. 

Both men also suffered burns, and a 30-year-old woman had minor injuries, cops said.

All four victims were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Several parked cars on the block were also damaged, cops said. 

In a separate mishap around 9:10 p.m., Ryan McCloskey, 21, was lighting a firework at a party on Trouville Road in Copiague when it exploded in his hand, cops said. 

He lost three fingers on his left hand, and damaged the other two, police said. 

McCloskey also suffered a burn on one leg, authorities said.

Police officers used a tourniquet to stem the bleeding before McCloskey, of Eastchester, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Earlier on Thursday, a Nassau County man was busted for handing over a firework to an 11-year-old boy – who ignited it, causing a blaze that spread to two homes, cops said. 

Karamjit Singh, 33, allegedly gave the pre-teen a firework on Red Maple Drive North in Levittown around 8:50 a.m. and asked him to set it off – but it malfunctioned, Nassau County Police said. 

A detached shed within the yard then became engulfed in flames, cops said.

The fire spread to Singh’s home, as well as a neighbor’s, police said. 

Though no one was hurt at either house, a second-floor tenant in Singh’s home was displaced because of the extensive damage, cops said. 

Singh was charged with two counts of fourth-degree arson, as well as second-degree reckless endangerment, unlawfully selling fireworks to a person under 18, unlawfully possessing, using or exploding fireworks and endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said. 

The 11-year-old boy was released to the custody of a family member. 

Fire Marshals are investigating the blaze.
