Yankees call up red-hot prospect Jorbit Vivas with JD Davis headed to IL

BALTIMORE – The Yankees are about to get a look at an interesting infield prospect.

Jorbit Vivas is being called up from Triple-A on Friday to join the roster in time for a series against the Orioles at Camden Yards, the team announced.

JD Davis is going on the injured list with a stomach flu, which opened up an opportunity for Vivas.

The 23-year-old, left-handed hitting Vivas was batting .258 with a .828 OPS across 37 games at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, though he had been particularly hot of late, batting .333 with a 1.113 OPS and five home runs over his last 19 games.

Davis had not been playing much since the Yankees acquired him from the A’s, taking just 15 plate appearances and batting 1-for-13 with two walks.

But it’s unlikely the Yankees are promoting Vivas just to sit on the bench.

He could enter a platoon at second base and/or third base with Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu, who have both been struggling offensively overall this year.

LeMahieu had taken a bouncing foul ball off the throat on Wednesday, though manager Aaron Boone said Thursday he expected to have the veteran back in the lineup on Friday.

Vivas, acquired from the Dodgers with since-DFA’d reliever Victor Gonzalez in December, made a strong first impression on the organization in big league camp, showing off his bat-to-ball skills and some pop.

He suffered a left orbital fracture on the final day of camp in a freak pregame injury, which delayed his season.

He came back in late April for two games, only to land back on the IL with complications from the injury, but then returned in full by late May.
