St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Jim Edmonds pulled no punches during Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
After Christopher Morel hit his second homer of the game, giving the Cubs an 8-3 lead over the Cardinals in the eighth inning, Edmonds, the former St. Louis star, spoke candidly about the designated hitter’s celebration.
“This kid’s celebration is a joke. I don’t mind saying it at all,” Edmonds said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I just don’t get it. You’re a .229 hitter in the big leagues and you’re running around like you’re Barry Bonds.”
Despite the Cardinals’ early lead, the Cubs had an offensive surge with six bombs to secure the victory. Ian Happ and Tomas Nido each contributed one, while Pete Crow-Armstrong and Morel belted two.
While Morel’s first homer came in the sixth inning off Cardinals’ Mike Mikolas, his second, which was off Andrew Kettredge in the eighth, was the one that seemed to break Edmonds.
Bally Sports Midwest announcer Chip Caray shifted focus to the fan in the crowd at Busch Stadium who caught Morel’s long ball.
This particular fan, dressed in a camouflage hat and army green shirt, had also caught a home run earlier in the game.
“He’s caught two homers in this game,” said Caray. “As we said, the Cubs can’t see him, he’s well-disguised.”
Edmonds didn’t hold back, suggesting that the fan’s physique may have played a role in helping him catch two home runs in one game.
“Well, he’s also taking up plenty of room out there in the outfield,” he said. “He’s got people kinda blocked off.”
Clearly, the 54-year-old was already feeling some type of way about the six homers he witnessed the Cardinals give up.
Morel, who signed with the Cubs as an international free agent in August 2015, entered the game with 16 homers on the season.
The win improved the Cubs’ record to 47-51 at the All-Star break and dropped the Cardinals to 50-46 as both teams chase the NL Central-leading Brewers.
