Trump to announce his vice presidential pick today
Former President Donald Trump will announce his vice presidential pick Monday, he told Fox this morning.
A senior Trump adviser confirmed Monday morning that “if the president has given some indication about the ‘when,’ I’m in no position to deny it.”
Trump has long teased who his running mate will be and has yet to reveal who it is, or specifically comment on who is strongly in consideration.
Sources close to the Trump campaign previously told The Post that Sen. JD Vance of Ohio and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum are his top contenders, as well as Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.
His announcement lines up with the first day of the Republican National Convention, and comes two days after a gunman shot Trump in the ear at a Pennsylvania rally, just missing his head.
The former president has been coy about who his pick may be throughout his campaign, choosing to build suspense with voters and keep the potential list of possible candidates long.
He spoke positively about roughly a dozen people during his rallies and on air, saying he had not made up his mind for months.
The list used to include contenders former rivals like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and bio tech mogul Vivek Ramaswamy, both of which will be at the RNC but are now unlikely to be Trump’s No. 2.
The pick is entirely up to Trump, so the former president could choose whichever candidate he chooses.
As late as Friday, sources close to the campaign told The Post that Trump had not made any phone calls to his chosen candidate.
The former president has said the RNC convention will have changes due to the Saturday night assassination attempt. The messaging is likely to include a mention of the shooting and what it means for the country.
The VP pick will join Trump in his campaign and is likely to debate against Vice President Kamala Harris if the Biden and Trump campaigns agree on a network to host the debate.
The Biden team has agreed to a CBS debate and Trump agreed to a debate hosted by Fox.
