The history of Virginia Sports Betting
As with many states, Virginia first began to explore legalizing sports betting when the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018. This led to Virginia passing a study bill in 2019 that would look to see whether the state should legalize sports betting.
After this study showed significant revenue for potential, a large amount of legislation was produced in order to swiftly legalize online sports betting. A compromise bill was eventually signed into law by Governor Ralph Northam in April 2020.
There are currently licenses for 12 online-only sportsbooks, with additional ones for online sportsbooks that partner with casinos or professional sporting organizations. This could bring the total number of legal online sportsbooks in Virginia to over 18.
