Meet the Unagi: The lightest dual-motor electric scooter you’ll ever need

After reviewing the best electric scooters on the market, I’m going to fangirl about how well this scooter rides. I found it to be the best overall for many reasons: speed, distance, safety, and style.

Think of Unagi as the Tesla among scooters. Crafted with the same carbon fiber found in Elon Musk’s SpaceX rockets, its sleek design embodies a blend of strength and lightweight portability.

On average, many competitor scooters weigh up to 50 pounds, making them much harder to lift but not this one! The scooter’s stem narrows as it stretches toward the magnesium alloy handlebar, allowing me to lift it with one hand without slipping.

I can vouch for its convenience; living in a five-story walk-up, I zip around on it multiple times a day without any hassle, as it only weighs 29.6 pounds.

The throttle brake lever makes dodging obstacles a cinch, requiring just a thumb’s touch compared to the bulky handlebar brakes other scooters have to offer. And with a foot brake at the rear, stopping is intuitive and seamless.

Its one-click system locks securely into place, making folding and unfolding a breeze.

I invested in the Model One Classic in 2020 and have loved every last minute, but once I took the Model One Voyager out for a spin, with twice the mileage and a faster charging speed of two hours, I had to upgrade stat. It was too good to be true and helped me roll across the city without running out of battery life.

The handlebar has no visible wires or bulk, which is amazing considering it has a digital dashboard, LED headlight, throttle, and braking system.

Unagi offers an All-Access Membership for those unsure about committing, providing rental options, comprehensive care, and even White Glove Love service for hassle-free delivery to major U.S. cities. But once you’ve experienced the convenience and performance of this sweet ride, you’ll never want to own it, trust me.

SPECIFICATIONS: Dimensions Before Folding: 37.80 inches (length) x 16.54 inches in width x 43.31 inches in height | Dimensions After Folding: 37.80 inches (length) x 16.54 inches in width x 14.96 inches in height | Wheel: 7.5 inches (diameter) / 1.6 inches (width) | Weight: 29.6 pounds | Top Speed: 20 miles per hour | Range: 12-25 miles | Charge Time: 0-100% (3 hr) / 0-80% (2 hr) / 0-50% (1 hr)

As an experienced rider through the streets of Manhattan, this one makes me feel most at ease because it glides effortlessly to a stop, and in New York, that makes all the difference between life and death.

Unagi’s solid rubber tires mean you won’t have to worry about flats, though the ride might feel a tiny bit smoother when hitting potholes in air-filled ones. But with each wheel boasting a 250-watt motor (500 watts on average, peaking over 1,000 watts), it’s got the power for both smooth cruising and hill climbing without slowing down.

The scooter can travel up to 20 miles per hour, charges in two to three hours (faster than most), and has a maximum range of 25 miles. However, that depends on many variables. I prefer to use dual motors at level 3 (its top speed) but note that your range will decrease to 13-16 miles, which is still really far for a scooter.

To adhere to local regulations, the scooter will go 15 miles per hour unless you unlock its 20 miles per hour feature. To activate, press and hold down both the accelerator and brake simultaneously. Then, push the power button ten times. You’ll hear a beep once it unlocks. Occasionally, you might need to repeat this process 2-3 times before it successfully activates.

Pairing with Unagi’s mobile app eliminates range anxiety. It provides detailed calculations based on weight, distance, terrain, and battery life.

Basically, Unagi effortlessly meets all my scooter needs, from its compact dimensions before and after folding to its impressive speed and range. It’s a ride I’d gladly recommend to anyone as my top pick.
