It's another "Fun with Flags" expose..... (again) not quite..... Shane Turner, PhD and I are getting ready for out trip to the ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals Annual General Meeting in Pennsylvania next week. Before that though we have an international speed management workshop in San Francisco and a post workshop with a major metropolitan city, similarly interested to learn how speed management can safe lives. This is a great opportunity to connect with our US based clients and to meet new colleagues and friends. We're looking forward to it.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit beautiful rural Victoria to run Community Focus Groups on behalf of a client. Targeted at road users of compact roundabouts, it was a fast and furious two days of engagement and travelling (with a bit of sightseeing) between Mornington Peninsula, Inverloch, and Ballarat. As well as taking in the rolling hills of Inverloch and exclaiming several times to my travel buddies, ‘This looks exactly like New Zealand’, I was reminded of why community engagement is key to understanding local challenges and opportunities and gaining buy-in for projects, as well as the human-focused intricacies of working in this space. It takes a village to put on a show, and big thumbs up to the Abley Team, local councils, and my travel companions for their support in running these successful sessions! Here are some of my takeaways. Communities are unique – they are made up of different customs, cultures, and people and one approach does not fit all. Applying a tailored approach and adapting on the fly is fundamental to generating good discussion and feedback Communities are tribal – people have a connection to their patch and care deeply about their backyard. Feeling out those connections early and getting under the hood helps put things in context and builds trust, quickly! Community engagement moves conversations forward – sometimes communities are stuck in a cycle and feel like nobody is listening or there is a lack of understanding of the project and benefits. Being face to face and listening helps people feel heard while providing an opportunity to educate and fill those gaps. Ginger Nuts and Pineapple Lumps are a hit at any public gathering – enough said!

Great experience attending the Transportation Research Board 2nd international conference on roadway departures in Orlando, Florida last week. It was a treat to catch up with our Arkansas client face-to-face where we're continuing the privilege of accelerating road safety outcomes from New Zealand. Thank you to the New Zealand and Australians that I met with personally. It was great to have a strong, focused and vocal community supporting great road safety outcomes. Let's do more! How sweet are our new Abley treats! Earlier this year, we partnered with SWEET, a local Christchurch company renowned for their 100% hand-crafted rock candy. It all started with a fun flavour test at our Christchurch office. Once a flavour was chosen, we handed over the reins to the talented team at Sweet, who expertly crafted our passionfruit-flavoured rock candy. You can see them in action below! We look forward to sharing these with you at a conference soon. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gbk3uqxp #abley #inspiringpositivechange #passionate

"Steve Abley Presents: Fun with Flags" 🎖.... not quite.... I'm looking forward to attending the Transportation Research Board 2nd International Roadside Safety Conference in Orlando Florida next week. I'm not looking forward to flying, but I am flying the New Zealand flag. Questions: 1) Any specific questions you would like me to ask these esteemed speakers Brian Latouf Nat Beuse Derwood Sheppard Ana M. Brenda Young, P.E., CPM Kenn Beer Robert Ritter and Katie Mueller on roadway departures (RwD)? 2) Great things to see and do on my day off in Orlando? 3) See you there? #safesystem #roadsafety #funwithflags #newzealand Ps. Thanks Iain McMillan for the flag idea 👏 - I upsized.
