VERY proud day yesterday for Shane Turner, PhD when the research that he crafted with Lewis Martin from Abley, and Wes Kumfer from the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, and Luana Ozelim Broshears from the ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals was referenced, not once, but TWICE (!!) by separate speakers at the 2024 ITE Annual General Meeting being held in Philadelphia US. WOW! 🤓 Thank you William Haynes of Toole Design Group and Guan Xu of Federal Highway Administration and Virginia O'Connor, P.E., PTOE, RSP2I of toXcel, LLC for acknowledging this important work that is intended to shape the direction of speed management in the US for years to come. 👏 👏 Also, thank you to Anyesha Mookherjee from the Federal Highway Administration Office of safety of Safety and Lisa Fontana Tierney from ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals for making this project possible, and keeping on it on schedule. Finally, there were many other examples of successful speed management that could have been included in the research. Unfortunately, the line must be drawn somewhere. The research report is found here https://lnkd.in/gPBAJRPV This work is meaningful and inspiring. Abley is very keen that other jurisdictions and practitioners learn the lessons we’ve already traversed regarding speed management and safe system. Reach out, to Shane Turner, PhD, Lewis Martin, Paul Durdin or me to learn more. #ITEPhilly #speedmanagement #safesystem #savelives #TheLatestFromAustralasia

On Sunday, Steve Abley joined Spencer Maxwell at the #ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Philadelphia to present on the importance of ethics for professional engineers. Steve gave an overview of the New Zealand code of ethics, offering advice on its interpretation and application, complete with real-life examples. We love having these opportunities to connect and share insights with others. Steve and Shane are having a great time at ITE and can't wait to share their insights with you when they return. Stay tuned! #ITEPhilly2024 #inspirepositivechange #roadsafety ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals

It's another "Fun with Flags" expose..... (again) not quite..... Shane Turner, PhD and I are getting ready for out trip to the ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals Annual General Meeting in Pennsylvania next week. Before that though we have an international speed management workshop in San Francisco and a post workshop with a major metropolitan city, similarly interested to learn how speed management can safe lives. This is a great opportunity to connect with our US based clients and to meet new colleagues and friends. We're looking forward to it.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit beautiful rural Victoria to run Community Focus Groups on behalf of a client. Targeted at road users of compact roundabouts, it was a fast and furious two days of engagement and travelling (with a bit of sightseeing) between Mornington Peninsula, Inverloch, and Ballarat. As well as taking in the rolling hills of Inverloch and exclaiming several times to my travel buddies, ‘This looks exactly like New Zealand’, I was reminded of why community engagement is key to understanding local challenges and opportunities and gaining buy-in for projects, as well as the human-focused intricacies of working in this space. It takes a village to put on a show, and big thumbs up to the Abley Team, local councils, and my travel companions for their support in running these successful sessions! Here are some of my takeaways. Communities are unique – they are made up of different customs, cultures, and people and one approach does not fit all. Applying a tailored approach and adapting on the fly is fundamental to generating good discussion and feedback Communities are tribal – people have a connection to their patch and care deeply about their backyard. Feeling out those connections early and getting under the hood helps put things in context and builds trust, quickly! Community engagement moves conversations forward – sometimes communities are stuck in a cycle and feel like nobody is listening or there is a lack of understanding of the project and benefits. Being face to face and listening helps people feel heard while providing an opportunity to educate and fill those gaps. Ginger Nuts and Pineapple Lumps are a hit at any public gathering – enough said!
