A community development agency. We exist to co-create a more equitable, inclusive and flourishing Aotearoa.

About us

Catalyse is a social change agency working with communities and organisations across the country. We work to make sure changes reflect what matters to local people who live, work, play, invest and care about a place. We do so by building on strengths; bringing together skills, talents, knowledge and resources from diverse sources; growing capacity; and ensuring community voices are heard, valued and included in ways that support everyone to thrive. We facilitate co-design and community engagement processes, deliver activations and events, develop strategic plans, undertake research and evaluation, accelerating collective goals and growing community as we go. We believe in investing in people as much as projects because everyone has something to offer. And we are better, in so many ways, together.

We were looking through our videos this morning to find some good examples of collective community action and we came across this from 2017: the first Repair Cafe at Gribblehirst Community Hub! Something that could only happen through a collective effort, it was a lot of fun, saved many appliances from landfill, saved people money and built many (now long term) local connections plus set the scene for many more repair cafes at the Hub. The office today was a lot about the secret world of cats and bees in the neighbourhood… because there are all sorts of worlds happening in the same place at the same time and cats and bees can teach us plenty about enjoying each day (in very different ways). And, in these times of polycrises, we think it's more important than ever to enjoy what we can, in our different ways. So, with our muse Angel Cat in attendance, we channeled a bit of cat and bee energy yesterday and prototyped some fun for the crowds that will pass by the office for the All Blacks game on Saturday. Because we can :)

A couple of years ago - almost to the date - we worked with Orakei Local Board and Mission Bay- Kohimarama Residents Association to host an open day to gather momentum to oppose the sale of Tagalad Reserve. The welcome sign on the chalkboard was still there when we visited this week and it must have been a good omen because now we are working with the Local Board again to host another open day to celebrate the reserve's return to community! Come and see what's behind those locked gates; hear from the Board Chair, Scott Milne and others about what's next; add your thoughts and ideas to those gathered two years ago; listen to live music from Nigel Gavin; drink coffee from The Coffee Store, eat donuts and cookies from Scratch Bakers, have your face painted by Jo from Sparkles and Smiles, make some GeoLingo rocks and play games with us! Saturday 25th from 10am -1pm. Entrances from Tagalad Rd and Nihill Crescent. Everyone welcome :)

Such a great group of people strategising together for stronger communities in Tāmaki Makaurau yesterday! What a pleasure to be among some really courageous kōrero and to also hear some clear suggested next steps. We'll be updating the existing report and adding these notes to it over the next week or so. The information from a survey, peer to peer conversations and 2 hui will be freely available to use - very useful, we hope, as support to many good things including all kinds of actions we didn't have time to cover today. Ngā mihi nui Helene Crown for a beautiful mihi whakatau, Arama Mataira for co-facilitating and Kerry Allan for a wonderful closing karakia. Thanks too to Inspiring Communities, Community Waitākere, Auckland North Community and Development (ANCAD) Foundation North Department of Internal Affairs (NZ) and Auckland Council for co-resourcing this mahi. #strongcommunities #collectivestrategising
