The first emissions reduction monitoring report from the Climate Change Commission shows that Aotearoa New Zealand is making progress but could still fall short of future emissions budgets, says Commission Chair Dr Rod Carr. #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #EmissionsReduction

📑 NEW REPORT: Our first annual monitoring report on emissions reduction has been released. This is the first in an annual series of reports, which will provide a series of snapshots forming a picture over time of how Aotearoa New Zealand is tracking towards its climate change goals. The emissions reduction monitoring report answers four key questions: ❓ What progress have we seen in emission reductions to date? ❓ How is the country tracking towards meeting the first emissions budget for 2022–2025? ❓ How is the country tracking towards meeting future emissions budgets and the 2050 target? ❓ What is needed for Aotearoa New Zealand to be on track for future emissions budgets and the 2050 target? The full report and supporting documents are available on our website: https://lnkd.in/gkcMfyZN #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #EmissionsReduction

How much progress is Aotearoa New Zealand making towards its climate mitigation and adaptation goals? In addition to our role providing advice to the Government, we're tasked with the job of independently monitoring and reviewing Aotearoa New Zealand's progress on emissions reduction and climate adaptation. This month we'll publish our first annual monitoring report – tracking progress towards emissions budgets and the 2050 emissions reduction target, and assessing the adequacy of the Government's first emissions reduction plan and progress in its implementation. On the adaptation side of the coin, in August we'll publish our first progress report on the implementation and effectiveness of the Government’s National Adaptation Plan. What we learn through our monitoring and reporting will help shape our future advice, highlight aspects where Aotearoa New Zealand’s approach could be better, and identify gaps in progress. More information about our monitoring and reporting mahi (and all our upcoming work) is available on our website. #ClimateMitigation #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateAction #EmissionsReduction

Thank you to everyone who shared feedback, submissions and insights with us during our public consultation in April and May. Over the eight weeks of consultation, we met with over a thousand people at more than 140 hui and events online and across the country – all the way from Northland to Southland. We've received hundreds of written submissions and have heard insights from Iwi/Māori, academics, businesses, industries, councils, climate advocacy groups, young people, communities, and many others. What happens next? • We'll now consider everything you've shared with us, and where appropriate we'll use it to re-evaluate our evidence base, approach and findings as we finalise these three pieces of advice to the government. • Our final advice is due to be provided to the Minister of Climate Change and published on our website by 31 December 2024. • The Government will consider our advice, including any recommendations, before making its decisions by the end of 2025. #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #EmissionsBudgets #EmissionsReduction #NetZero
