Big thanks to Entre for inviting Hamish Stayt and myself to speak at the UC 2024 Enterprise Challenge Workshop about our experiences and journey with our company Ecobase SC Ltd. It was great connecting with many talented students who are in the early stages of developing some highly innovative businesses. Always rewarding to be able to provide some support and share our experiences. Looking forward to seeing how their ventures unfold in the future!

One of Ecobalm’s biggest strengths is its appeal to a range of different consumers. Conscious about the environment? Sick of unnecessary ingredients? Wanting a lip-balm that just works? Ecobalm ticks all the boxes as an authentic NZ product. Therefore, we have always known the tourism sector is a massive market potential. Tourists visit New Zealand to experience the natural beauty we have to offer, and Ecobalm combines the qualities of our land into a premium yet affordable product. Starting Ecobase during the Covid-19 lockdown meant this substantial sales avenue was closed for over two years. As the influx of tourists begins again, we are finally showing off our product to visitors - and the feedback has been awesome (including many emails asking if we ship to UK, Portugal, or The Netherlands!) Ecobalm is now stocked in 6 airports across Aotearoa, including Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. We have recently begun selling in Aotea Gifts, the nations leading Gift & Souvenir chain. We are proud to sell a product which reflects our values and promotes the best aspects of our country.

Graduation done! The Ecobase lads have officially graduated from the University of Canterbury after an awesome three years juggling study, part-time jobs, and growing Ecobase! We both completed a Bachelor of Commerce, with Hamish Majoring in Economics and Finance and Mackenzie Majoring in Marketing and Human Resource Management. Being able to apply our uni degrees into our roles at Ecobase has been so much fun and we are both excited to see where the future takes us! 🎓 #Graduation #UCGrads #Ecobase UC Business School

From the beginning of our journey we wanted Ecobalm to be readily available to as many people as possible. Cardboard lip balms already existed, but if I went to my local supermarket I wouldn’t have known - only international brands with plastic were available. We have always seen the best way to get our product to actually make a difference in the industry is making it as accessible as possible to the regular consumer. We are therefore thrilled that 20+ supermarkets across Foodstuffs South Island have backed us in our mission, and are excited for this number to continue to grow!

Welcome to Ecobase! 🌿 Ecobase is operated by two lads from South Canterbury - Hamish and Mackenzie. We are both recent graduates from the University of Canterbury and founded Ecobase during our last year at Timaru Boys’ High School. We have grown Ecobase from a Young Enterprise startup to a successful company creating high-quality sustainable products. Ecobase is leading responsible change within the cosmetics industry. Our compostable products and eco-friendly manufacturing processes reflect our values and dedication to eliminating the harmful life cycle of plastic products. At Ecobase, we're doing things differently. As a cosmetics company run by two guys from Timaru, we faced a fair amount of criticism and jokes from our peers for not fitting into the norm. This only motivated us further to shake up the industry and challenge these gender stereotypes — at the end of the day, we all get dry lips! Join us on our mission to challenge the cosmetics industry by creating sustainable change. 🍃 #Ecobase #SustainableBusiness #YES #SustainableCosmetics
