This week we've gathered all the ingredients we need to start our first run at making 'Liquid Wool' fertiliser. Wool is full of all the ingredients we need for fertiliser, nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus and potassium. Turning it into a liquid makes it practical for so many more formats, including as a complementary option for our seedling plugs. This could also provide another opportunity for our wool farmers, another market, better value add. We want to lead the world in the science of #growingwithwool. This is what we think the future may look like.

Did you know sulphur helps the uptake of nitrogen in plants? Plants actually use sulphur to absorb nitrogen. Depending on your soil quality, you may need to add sulphur with your nitrogen fertiliser. Luckily wool has sulphur too! It can have up to 0.32kg per kg of wool although its usually lower, on average 0.078kg. So the carbon in wool releases natural CO2 which feeds the microbes that deconpose the wool. The sulphide bonds decompose to sulphur and the nitrogen can then be taken up by plants, along with the small amounts of phosphorus and potassium.

We need to ensure that we can grow food even when imports are constrained, be it growing media, fertiliser or fuel for our farm production equipment.

This compost recipe comes from overseas research. Give it a go and let us know your results. Make sure to cut up your blankets or pull apart any wool clumps.
