It’s been an absolute privilege working with these organisations and bringing indigenous perspectives to life and showcasing the value of integrating indigenous whakaaro. Thank you to Sustainable Business Council NZ, and thinkstep-anz for being a dream team to work with and to Abbie from Z Energy NZ for hosting the panel discussion this morning. We get to do this all over again soon!

"We need to grow capability, not just be the capability." Thanks to Abbie Bull at Z Energy NZ for one of our favorite quotes from this morning's launch breakfast of the Sustainable Business Council NZ's Sustainability Guides. These practical guides https://lnkd.in/gmqGGv9p demystify sustainability concepts and provide actionable steps for businesses. They are tailored to support various roles within organisations in engaging with sustainability practices. Key Takeaways: 1. Sustainability = Team Sport Sustainability is a collective effort. It's not just about individual actions but about how every team member in an organisation can contribute to a more sustainable future. As Jay C. said, "Sustainability involves everyone in your organization, from risk roles to marketing." 2. Start Small Even small steps can lead to significant progress in sustainability. Don’t be afraid to start with small steps. Breaking down sustainability initiatives into small, actionable steps is crucial. Start with what you already have and build from there. 3. Stay Curious Continuously learn and explore new sustainability practices. 4. Integrating Indigenous Perspectives Alyx Pivac highlighted the importance of incorporating indigenous wisdom into business practices, stating, "Sustainability, when looked at holistically, is essentially indigenous wisdom." This approach enriches our sustainability strategies and ensures a holistic view of our environmental and social impact. Some quotes from the Speakers: 📢 Mike Burrell (SBC): "The guides are about translating technical sustainability information into leader-friendly language." 📢 Jay C. (SBC): "Learning and leadership are key. You don’t have to know everything about sustainability, but being in a position to build that knowledge is crucial." 📢 Barbara Nebel: "It’s not about who can reduce faster than the competition; it’s about collaboration. Sustainability is a race, but it’s not a competition." 📢 Alyx Pivac (Kaitiaki Collective): "Building relationships with indigenous communities and considering the impacts of your actions is crucial." 📢 Abbie Bull (Z Energy): "Reflecting on our journey, we have been rapidly learning new frameworks and techniques as stakeholder expectations evolve, and it’s hard to keep up. These guides and tools will help make our jobs easier." Resources and Future Steps: These guides cover various topics such as nature, climate mitigation, and social sustainability. They are part of SBC’s comprehensive toolkit that includes additional resources, webinars, and communities of practice. It has been a real privilege to work with Alyx and Jay on the development of those guides. Thanks for the opportunity and we are looking forward to continue the close collaboration! Waipapa Taumata Rau is saddened by the untimely passing of Master of Arts (Education) alumnus and former staff member (Schools Partnership Office) Fa'anānā Efeso Collins. In 1999, he became the first Pacific president of the AUSA before going on to become a respected Pacific politician and Green MP. Pro Vice-Chancellor Pacific Jemaima Tiatia-Siau says Efeso paved the way for young Pacific leaders and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with his family. Manuia lou malaga, Efeso.
