  • 🎉 Congratulations to Ursula! 🎉 Ursula, who is Deaf, leads the Department of NCEA NZSL at Ko Taku Reo. With a small number of qualified Deaf teachers in New Zealand, her role is vital. She started teaching NCEA NZSL in 2019 and became Head of Department in 2021. This subject is crucial as NZSL is an official language. Ursula pioneers online teaching for NCEA NZSL to reach more Deaf and hard of hearing students nationwide, overcoming geographic barriers. In 2023, she earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Digital and Collaborative Learning while working fulltime, and graduated in March 2024 with an award for her dedication. Now, she's pursuing her Master's fulltime, focusing on enhancing online interaction among students. Ursula aims to publish research in 2025 to improve online NZSL education. Passionate about Deaf education and leadership, she aspires to further her impact through a PhD, believing that Deaf people should lead and research their community. 👏👏👏 #DeafEducation #NZSL #Leadership #Inspiration #NCEA #DeafCommunity #LanguagePreservation

  • 🌟 Celebrating International Week of Deaf People! 🌟 Hello everyone, This week, we are thrilled to join the global community in celebrating #InternationalWeekOfDeafPeople. Today, we're focusing on a crucial aspect of this celebration – the Declaration of the Rights of Deaf Children. Article 6 of the Declaration emphasises a fundamental right: that all deaf children have the right to learn the linguistic identity and culture of the deaf community. 🤟 Here at Ko Taku Reo, we are excited to announce that we are taking significant steps towards incorporating Deaf Studies into our Extended Curriculum. Our curriculum will delve into essential topics such as identity, Deafhood, culture, and mana motuhake, empowering our ākonga to understand themselves better and navigate the world with confidence and pride. 🌏💪 We are particularly proud of our students who have been actively involved in piloting these themes through our Virtual Deaf Space program. Thank you for being a part of this amazing journey with us as we celebrate International Week of Deaf People. Keep an eye out for more updates on our exciting journey ahead! 🎉 #IWDP #DeafRights #DeafCulture #DeafEducation
