The Department of Conservation Jobs for Nature funded Restoring and Protecting Flora Project, led by The Nature Conservancy in Aotearoa New Zealand has completed its field work, having surpassed the ambitious target of controlling invasive plants at approximately 150 ecologically significant sites across Buller, Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough - delivering over 20,000 ha of knock-back work to major weed infestations. This inspiring legacy has been supported by many partners including Department of Conservation (DOC), Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council - Te Kaunihera o te tai o Aorere, Marlborough District Council, Buller District Council, NGOs, landowners and community groups. We've seen dedicated work from contractors Kumanu Environmental, Project De-vine Environmental Trust and MBC Environmental Solutions across the top of the South to control invasive weeds that had the potential to severely degrade or destroy valuable native habitats. We're now looking at ways to leverage this legacy and restore the native forests of Te Tauihu and Kawatiri.

Exciting to see The Nature Conservancy in Aotearoa New Zealand and Revive Our Gulf deploying mussels into the Hauraki Gulf/Te Moananui-ā-Toi/Tikapa Moana to form new reefs, restoring some of the original ecosystem of the sea floor and encouraging other species to flourish, as well as cleaning the seawater. Shellfish are critical to the restoration of marine ecosystems. #marinerestoration #shellfish
Last week the Revive Our Gulf project marked a big milestone with Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, delivering the latest batch of kūtai/mussels to Kawau Bay in the Hauraki Gulf/Te Moananui-ā-Toi/Tīkapa Moana. July has seen seven million mussels distributed, which will help grow our knowledge of how to restore mussel reefs at scale. Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust Chief Executive, Nicola MacDonald says: “By reestablishing these kūtai reefs we are taking solid and decisive action to reverse the human impacts on the Gulf, and give our wai/water a fighting chance to ensure it is stable enough to support us now and into the future.” This kūtai restoration project is an internationally significant example of successful indigenous partnership. Exciting to see two of these species have been found in the KMTT rohe - near Deniston on the West Coast, in Kahurangi, and near Lake Rotoiti.
Three new species of wētā have been discovered in the southern regions of Aotearoa New Zealand, belonging to two new genera. Professor in Evolutionary Ecology Steven Trewick has detailed his discoveries in a newly published paper in Zootaxa, writing how the new species were immediately recognisable as novel discoveries. Among the recent findings is the newly described genus Crux, with two new species: Crux boudica found in Rakiura Stewart Island and southwest South Island, and Crux heggi from northwest South Island.
