Throughout August, KPMGers across the motu have enjoyed our 2024 Money Month sessions, dedicated to raising attention and engagement on money matters. These online sessions provide our team with the opportunity to hit pause in their work days, and take a moment to think about their financial wellbeing, covering topics across open banking, financial wellbeing and ethical and sustainable investments, as well as a national economic update.    A big thank you who hosted our sessions: Jane-Renee Retimana from Payments NZ, Mike Jones at Bank of New Zealand, Dean Anderson from Kernel and Katie Beith from Forsyth Barr Limited   Money Month is the annual public awareness and engagement campaign from Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission - the team behind Sorted. 

“We are ambitious, and we are here to fundamentally shift the way we plan, invest in, build, and look after our infrastructure.” - Hon Chris Bishop    It is great to be back at Building Nations for 2024. Minister Chris Bishop opened this morning, expressing “if we keep doing things the way we are now, we won’t be able to deal with “business as usual”, let alone get a grip on the future challenges we face like population growth, the impacts of climate change, and global inflation.”   We are heartened to hear that his priorities as Minister of Infrastructure are: 1. Developing a 30-year National Infrastructure Plan 2. Establishing a National Infrastructure Agency (NIA) 3. Improving infrastructure funding and financing 4. Improving the consenting framework 5. Improving education and health infrastructure, and 6. Strengthening asset management and resilience   Building Nations 2024 is a call to action for the industry to coordinate on the way forward in a time of flux. During this morning's event, co-hosted with the British New Zealand Business Association, Trade Minister Hon Todd McClay provided a keynote update on New Zealand's trade strategy and priorities.   The Minister spoke about the government’s approach to doubling export value, making mention of how this has created a response from sectors to work together to boost productivity, seek ways it can improve value, and collaborate further.   There has been a focus on trade missions, emphasising ongoing free trade negotiations with the UAE and efforts to fortify relations with India. The Minister noted a 16% increase in goods trade with the UK in the past year due to the FTA, elevating the UK to be our fastest-growing trade relationship.   Our guests also had the pleasure of hearing from Amber Taylor, Co-Founder and CEO of ARA Journeys, and Ian Proudfoot, KPMG Global Head of Agribusiness, who shared insights on international expansion possibilities in the agri and tech sectors.   Philip Wood OBE, Nick Swallow, Matthew Prichard

Founded by KPMG NZ Partner and WSBG alumnus, Adrian Wimmers, the award recognises a top achieving Pasifika student annually and is a reflection of Adrian’s passion and investment in empowering Māori and Pasifika excellence. Adrian congratulates Fono for this recognition of his hard work and is proud to support such an inspiring student. Taitaifono (Fono) Tamati, is committed to making history for his country and community. “There are currently only two actuaries living in the entire South Pacific. We were thrilled to host Infrastructure New Zealand’s Partnering for Growth and Place-Based Solutions event this week in Auckland. Nick Leggett, Michelle McCormick, and Martina Moroney shared their rich insights and observations from their recent delegations to Europe and the UK.   It was a wonderful evening with over 120 leaders in infrastructure coming together to consider how we might transfer some of what we observe abroad for the benefit of New Zealand.   Our Partner Mair Brooks attended the Europe delegation in May and reflects on the importance of developing a shared ambition and long-term vision for New Zealand. For Aotearoa New Zealand, Fintech has cemented its place one of our fastest growing industries, outpacing the wider tech industry in terms of revenue. The high cost of capital and geopolitical uncertainty has put a damper on investments both globally and locally, and the fintech market isn’t immune with investment levels for New Zealand falling since 2023. However, the New Zealand market is fortunate that initiatives to promote fintech entrepreneurship and investment continue to fuel the sector's expansion.
