Tom Hunt is a bit of a legend in the Nawton community of Kirikiriroa Hamilton’ says Western Community Centre Manager Neil Tolan… ‘The love care and drive he has to support and grow our local youth is an inspiration to us all and we are so lucky to have him here’. This month, @lotsoflittlefires Joe Wilson, sits down with Tom Hunt (youth worker legend) to discuss and learn what traits and techniques makes a good youth worker and how Tom (and anyone for that matter) can utilise these to create safe, caring, positive and supportive environments for our youth to be the positive change, that deep down, they all want to be. As a trainer of youth workers with Praxis, we also discuss what some of the major systems barriers are that are leading to many youth workers leaving the sector in search of better pay and secure contracts and what could be done to better care for the good youth workers who we all rely on to look after many of our youth. We are so grateful to Tom for sharing his wisdom, insights and heart for the young people in his community. This story is really punching to have the experienced voice and knowledge of the youth development sector to be heard, respected and followed by those who are shaping the policies and processes in government and funding positions. Action advocacy, strengths based storytelling and sharing the beautiful positive alternative, that already exists in our communities, is what @lotsoflittlefires strives to achieve by shining a light and creating a seat at the table for people to speak for themselves. Massive mihi to Onemancrew as always for the magical filming and editing. Mauri ora Whanau - please share, like and subscribe of this kaupapa resonates with you 🤘🏽🙏🏽✨

Today we share and celebrate the kōrero of Lots of Little Fires itself and how the kaupapa has helped create meaningful impact within and across out communities. We are so grateful all the incredible Changemakers who have featured in the first ten stories and we are humbled to continue this ataahua mahi for the year ahead. Raising awareness, inspiring others and celebrating the positive alternatives that already lie within our communities are the foundation of what we try to achieve and we feel honoured to play a small part in being part of the change. It is good people that make the difference. #socialchange #videostory #waikatowellbeingproject #lotsoflittlefires #socialimpact #storytelling #video #equity #equality #endyouthhomelessness #transitionalhousing #bethechange #community #goodpeople #hope #youthempowerment #waikato https://lnkd.in/g8u-22J2

Humbled to be welcomed into the Rainbow Hub Waikato whare and to share the beautful kōrero and kaupapa of such a wonderful and inspiring group of people. “Imagine only having one hour a day where you feel safe enough to be yourself, truly yourself and be with other likeminded people. Well that’s what our community go through everyday but that hour is one hour a week. We exist because we need to exist” If you are part of the Rainbow Community, we see you and we celebrate the beautiful diversity you bring. For those of you who are not, please show compassion and be an active ally who stands for equity and inclusion in our world. Meeting Daniel Ormsby. by Joe Wilson Social Innovator and Storyteller, Waikato Wellbeing Project "Even the drive down to Waitomo felt somehow magical…Early evening light cascading off the fields, hills and trees releasing a million shades of spectacular colours and moods spreading a welcome calmness around and within us. Daniel Ormsby and I first got to know each other through video call, that no longer new, and now weirdly comfortable post covid whakawhanaungatanga phenomena. I had previously shared the Lots of little Fires kaupapa with Daniel via email. To my relief and excitement, he was instantly curious and keen to get involved. With a shared sense of humour and a mutual recognition for each other's kōrero and mahi, it led to a natural trust and child-like excitement to meet in person. " #socialimpact #socialjustice #advocacy
