New Zealand's one of the best countries in the world for wind generation 💨 And last week showed why – it was an outstanding week from our six wind farms. In the first full week of having Harapaki online, we produced a total of 42.24 GW/hr, an amount we’ve only beaten on two other occasions. And at times last Monday, Harapaki was generating more than 170 MW – close to its maximum of 176 MW. Our wind farms are producing clean, renewable #energy and providing valuable support for our South Island #hydro generation. Levels like those we experienced last week make a big difference given current dry conditions. We asked Mike Smith, our North Island Electricity Supply Manager, to provide a bit more detail. #windpower #windfarm #windturbine #sustainability #cleanenergy #windgeneration

One of the many ways we’re helping New Zealand towards net-zero is through our Certified product and Community Decarbonisation Fund. This fund supports community and business projects – typically solar panels and EVs – aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last two years it’s distributed $1.5 million in funding! That represents 100% of the net proceeds earned from Certified – Meridian’s certified renewable energy product. This lets #business customers match their electricity consumption with an equivalent amount generated by one of our hydro stations or wind farms. They can then report their market-based Scope 2 emissions – the ones linked to electricity usage – as zero. It’s a big win for business, community groups and the #environment. The Waitaki Hydro Scheme is key part of New Zealand’s history - one that’s helped keep the lights on for almost a century 💡 Right now, we’re going through a reconsenting process to determine how the Waitaki Hydro Scheme should operate for the next 35 years. Harapaki Wind Farm is now fully commissioned and pumping out full power!💪 Harapaki is our sixth and newest wind farm, on the Maungaharuru Range north of Napier. Its 41 turbines can generate 176MW – that enough to power roughly 70,000 homes, or approximately all of Hawke’s Bay! We’d like to thank our project partners for their efforts – it has been an immense effort, and one that we are exceptionally proud of. We’ve got a world-class renewable construction team backed by a great group of contractors and sub-contractors. What they’ve achieved in the face of COVID-19 and multiple weather events is truly outstanding. We're working hard to help people in energy hardship. That's why we're always up for challenging conversations and making real change in the best interests of our customers. Our Chief Executive, Neal Barclay, has written in today's New Zealand Herald about the issue of energy hardship, what we know about the size of it, and what we're doing to help customers struggling with their power bills. “You see over the horizon, you can see the ocean around… it’s just really beautiful. 🌈 One of the perks of building Harapaki wind farm is having some of the best views from any construction site in New Zealand! As we get close to completion on this mammoth build, we’re acknowledging some of the team that’s helped build New Zealand’s newest wind farm. #Construction #cleanenergy #windfarm #sustainability #windturbine Smith Crane & Construction Ltd

We wear our sustainability credentials on our sleeves. And when those sleeves are done for, we recycle them 🦺 The world produces 92 million tons of textile waste every year, and 85% of the materials used to make clothing will end in landfill or be incinerated. We’re keen to be part of the solution, which is why we’re proudly supporting the Workwear Recycling PPE scheme. Workwear Recycling takes clothing, plastics and PVC that would have otherwise ended up at the nearest landfill and recycles them. In fact, every kilogram of material sent to Workwear Recycling saves the equivalent of 7.16kg of CO2! It’s an outstanding initiative that’s great for the environment, and our team’s totally embraced it. In fact, we’ve already recycled 447 items of PPE, weighing almost half a tonne, and helping prevent almost three tonnes of carbon emissions! #sustainability #cleanenergy #ppe #recycling
