About us

The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) is a not-for-profit, industry organisation that aims to make sure New Zealanders live, work and play in a healthy, sustainable built environment. We do this through: - setting standards of industry best practice - mainly through environmental rating systems for the built environment; - influencing policy through leading and demonstrating best practice, advocacy through industry networks and supporting a research agenda that will influence the market; - education and training across all areas of the building industry value chain; and - providing access to networks, information and the latest global resources for our members to actively lead the market. We run rating tools that verify building sustainability, helping industry reduce the impact and improve the quality of homes, workplaces and public buildings: Green Star - the tool for offices, schools, industrial sites and any other commercial or public building Homestar - the tool for home sustainability NABERSNZ - energy performance benchmark for NZ office buildings This account is not monitored for customer service, if you have any inquries please email us at [email protected]

Energy systems | Health I Climate | Well being l Collaboration I Circularity I Sustainable finance I Resilience I Lower carbon healthy buildings and communities

Jolly excited by this. The NZGBC have released a free practical guide on building healthy lower carbon homes. It has great case studies and detailed steps on ✅moisture control - meaning less mould ✅controlling overheating - stopping dangerous temperatures & sweating at night ✅getting decent air quality ✅measuring embodied carbon - how to calculate quickly & easily But wait there is more... we now have three different data sources from those building homes and from models showing costs are in the range of 0-1.5% uplift over building to the building code. 🔪 🔪 Here are the steak knives.... Sustainable finance is coming to the fore with banks offering significantly lower development finance and some offering 1% off mortgage rates for home owners So the pathway to healthy homes for NZ has just become a lot easier. Let's get into it. By building efficient fossil fuel free homes, buildings & communities we can help solve this energy crisis. Let’s get into it. #health #carbon #runningcosts #wellbeing #energycrisis #airquality #

📣 Not to be missed. Sustainable finance – the catalytic effect If we are to build the transition to 2030 access to capital through sustainable finance is critical to our success, and it’s a fast-moving space. The sustainable finance revolution demands asset owners and entities deliver high quality, verified outcomes against a large number of criteria set by financial institutions, disclosure requirements, and multiple international frameworks. More broadly, there are also moves to explore opportunities to harmonise approaches to sustainable finance, starting with Australia and New Zealand’s sustainable finance taxonomies.   Join four of our leaders who are at the cutting edge to better understand global developments in sustainable finance for property and construction, progress on the development of the taxonomy for Aotearoa, and the demands on delivering high quality, verified outcomes against the myriad of criteria set by international frameworks. Our expert panel will share their insights into global developments, local impacts and exploring the catalytic effect of sustainable finance in building the transition toward our 2030 and 2050 targets. Daniel Street from DLA Piper will facilitate the discussion, joined by Jo Kelly from the @the centre for sustainable finance, Rachel Brown from DLA Piper, Dean Spicer, CFA from ANZ. At Precinct, we build properties that make it a pleasure to live, work and enjoy the city. Over the last 10 years, Precinct’s strategy has evolved and expanded into new sectors delivering some transformational and truly iconic projects like Commercial Bay, Willis Lane, the Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct and Bowen Campus. In addition to the release of our annual results today, we are delighted to launch the redevelopment and revitalization of our greatest asset – our brand. We are incredibly proud of the outcomes we have achieved in creating destinations across Auckland and Wellington. Each space meticulously crafted to bring life, vibrancy, and connection with every square metre. From one-of-a-kind urban environments to residential magic, we are excited to leverage the equity and reputation we have in the commercial office market to advance our entry into new markets, beginning with the development of homes in Tamaki’s central city neighbourhoods. You will start to see our brand pop up more often across our residential developments. Precinct’s brand is grounded by the quality of our assets, the people, and partners we hold relationships with, and our growing ambitions to continue delivering remarkable, sustainable, mixed-use projects for our cities. Our new logo, especially the ‘P’, is a representation of Precinct’s art for creating space for life, space that draws people in and brings them together. It’s not necessarily the physical buildings that make a place, but the laneways, intersections and streetscapes in between. These places are the real nexus for connection. The concentration of our assets in Commercial Bay, Bowen Campus and Wynyard Quarter are prime examples of our understanding of this philosophy and enable us to create a central nexus within these developments. A huge thanks to our partners Richards Partners | Strategy and Design, Wildlabs, Jason Mann, The Hood & Co and DDB Group Aotearoa NZ Our shiny new website is now live: precinct.co.nz Scott Pritchard George Crawford Richard Hilder Nicola McArthur

So appreciate Daniel Street's post highlighting "the most successful policy interventions have been in the building sector, followed by transport, industry, and electricity." We concur. 💡 In this consutlation on ERP2, Government has commented that they're open to working with our sector to explore opportunities. 🛠 Add your voice. If you need food for thought, take a look at our response on our website or get in touch. 📞

Which government policies actually have the greatest impact on reducing emissions? A long-read for your ERP2 consultation deadline Sunday 💡📗🔽 Science magazine published a paper on Friday from Stechemesser et al called "𝐶𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑚𝑎𝑗𝑜𝑟 𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠: 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑙 𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑠". The authors reviewed 1500 climate policies implemented between 1998 and 2022 across 41 countries. 63 policy interventions were considered successful at reducing emissions (based on a two-year window either side of the intervention). The key takeaways were: ▶ the policy mix of markets and regulations is important, but no mix will work across all sectors; ▶ policies often fail because they are too specifically targeted; ▶ while subsidies and regulations are the most frequently used policy tools, they are only really effective when combined with price-based tools such as carbon prices and energy taxes in developed economies; ▶ while price-based tools are effective, they work better when combined with other policies (i.e. its not just market pricing that drives the best change); ▶ the policy mix needs to be aligned (for instance banning new fossil fuel cars, increasing the price of fuel, and subsidising public transport and EVs) to be successful; and ▶ the most successful policy interventions have been in the building sector, followed by transport, industry, and electricity. 📝 https://lnkd.in/g5epKA4V Returning the favour of your recent suggested reading Alec Tang, Gerri Ward, Mike Burrell. Have you had your say on the Second Emissions Reduction Plan? It's not too late to get your submissions in before they close 25 August! Speaking at our recent Green Property Summit, the Minister of Climate Change Hon. Simon Watts encouraged our sector to get involved and present our vision to support climate action. The built environment presents huge opportunities to slash emissions quickly, and cost-effectively. With the draft ERP2 containing just a line or two about buildings, there's a large gap to fill. Suffice to say, our response is a whole new chapter in itself.   Our key recommendations include: ✅ Improving the Building Code to deliver lower-carbon homes and buildings ✅ Phasing out fossil gas in homes and buildings, including ending new residential gas connections from 2026. ✅ Requiring energy labels on homes and buildings ✅ Correcting the ERP modelling to align with MBIE’s production forecasts. ✅ Removing the reliance on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) ✅ Strengthening ETS pricing ✅ Expanding the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme to subsidise electrification of home heating and cooking from 2027, converting 25,000 homes a year. ✅ Implementing a concerted programme, building on the successful replacement of coal boilers in schools and hospitals, to subsidise 10% of commercial buildings per year from 2026 to electrify space and water heating. ✅ Incentivising improved home insulation and home solar generation. The recommendations aim to reduce emissions, reduce ongoing costs for families and Kiwi businesses. Many of our recommendations and policies were laid out in our recent report ‘Closing the gap: Hidden emissions and untapped potential of buildings to reduce costs and deliver for carbon budgets’ -https://bitly.cx/VV9nG Read our full submission, and feel free to use it for your own - https://lnkd.in/gQV9xDMc
