About us

The New Zealand Writers Guild (NZWG) is a professional organisation for script writers in the fields of film, television, theatre, new media and radio. With over 400 members, the NZWG is the representative body for writers in the New Zealand entertainment industry and is affiliated with international Writers Guilds. The aim of the NZWG is to protect the rights of the writers and offers them advice and support during contract negotiation. Furthermore, the Guild works to lobby government and funding bodies. Maintaining and improving the minimum condition of work and rates of compensation for writers is one of the main objectives of the NZWG. Located in Auckland, New Zealand, the Guild functions and works in way that adheres to the spirit and principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. Our services help writers to focus on their crafts and scripts. We help them to improve their craft and build a sustainable career. • Today we had the honour of hosting Minister Paul Goldsmith on a tour of the Auckland Film Industry. First stop was South Pacific Pictures Ltd opening the day with a quick stop at a writer's room in action (hello NZWG Board Member Dan Musgrove) working on a development project, then onto Shortland Street to check out how the show creates beloved characters and stories at such a fast pace! We checked out the sets of Brokenwood Mysteries and saw a wonderful teaser for The Traitor... no pics soz! Thanks to the Screen Auckland and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited team for walking us through the Auckland Film Studios. Highlighting the needs of international productions, and how local HOD's and crews are a major drawcard. And we ended the tour at Department of Post and met with a group of post, VFX and gaming business leaders. Discussing the innovation and world leading technology created in Aotearoa. We hope the Minister gained some insights into the ways in which our industry functions and look forward to seeing what his Arts & Culture Strategy holds for our sectors. Of interest to us all are the SPR, education & training, levies, the Broadcasting Act and making great stories to share with the world.
