🏉 Day 2: Embracing Culture and Challenges 🏉 Day two of our journey in #wellington was filled with enriching experiences, challenges, and camaraderie as we continue to prepare for the #paralympic qualifier tournament. The day kicked off early for me, as I hit the gym at 6am, prioritizing my health and well-being—a crucial aspect of leading this incredible team. Following a tough workout, we gathered for a team breakfast at 8, fueling ourselves for the day ahead. At 9am, we were privileged to host Jason and Trish, esteemed leaders in their respective Iwi, who shared profound insights into cultural belonging and its significance within our team. Their wisdom, particularly regarding the Haka, resonated deeply with us, reinforcing our sense of identity and unity. Left inspired, the team had some free time until the afternoon. Meanwhile, I took the opportunity to visit the NZCIS, our tournament venue, to ensure accessibility for all our players. Despite encountering various challenges, the remarkable staff at New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport worked tirelessly to address our concerns, exemplifying their commitment to creating an inclusive environment. As the afternoon approached, we embarked on a unique team-building activity: axe throwing SWEET AXE THROWING! Laughter and friendly competition filled the air as we honed our skills and embraced the thrill of the challenge. Congratulations to Greg, Dan, Maia, (and myself ;) ) for making it to the finals, with Maia emerging victorious by a mere point—truly a testament to our team's competitive spirit. The day concluded with a delightful team dinner at Shed 22, providing a final opportunity for relaxation and bonding before transitioning into tournament mode. Stay tuned as we gear up for the battles ahead, fortified by the strength of our team and the richness of our cultural heritage. #TeamCulture #AccessibilityMatters #InclusiveSports #Day2 #RoadToParalympics

  • There is so much to gain for athletes with disabilities and able-bodied athletes training and competing together. Creating an inclusive and adapted environment can be an amazing learning experience but ultimately benefits all those involved. We see the importance of creating inclusive programmes, that bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, allowing them to share their passion for sports and being active.

Yesterday, I visited the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport and was amazed by the different sports and cultures interconnected! By implementing inclusive training practices and adaptive equipment, we can create environments where athletes with disabilities can train alongside able-bodied athletes, fostering mutual respect and understanding. For example, the high-performance gym allows #athletes with #disabilities and able-bodied athletes to train side by side, learn from each other, and achieve collective success. Thanks Jamie, great facilities! At Disability Sport Auckland, for our Rock Climbing programme, athletes with and without disabilities train together using adaptive equipment. Through shared experiences on the wall, athletes develop mutual respect and understanding, fostering a supportive team environment where all members can thrive and grow! Looking forward to a great #paralympic qualifier tournament!

People only see the tip of the iceberg... Engaging in advocacy efforts, policy initiatives, and public awareness campaigns can raise visibility and awareness of the rights and needs of athletes with disabilities in the sports community and beyond. Collaborating with sports organisations, policymakers, and #media outlets can help promote inclusive policies and ensure accurate and respectful representation of athletes with disabilities in the media. Disability Sport Auckland raises #awareness of the importance of #inclusion and representation in sports and works to break barriers to participation and success for athletes with #disabilities. Creating the very first Wheelchair Rugby League programme in #newzealand was the result of: - Collaborating with New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL), Warriors Community Foundation, Auckland Rugby League and Counties Manukau Rugby League. - Using all our medias platforms created awareness in a new community. - The outcome, apart from the smiles from the kids, is the change in policies and strategies for those collaborating organisations in the months to come.
