Toitū Takatāpui: A new name honouring the enduring existence of tāngata Takatāpui and recognising our positioning as a Kaupapa Māori provider of diversity and inclusion services.    We are thrilled to share our new name, which has been gifted to us by Tipene Lemon (Ngāti Hine), Pou Tāhuhu | Deputy CEO of Kāhui Tū Kaha. Our new name has been endorsed by Prue Kapua, Chairperson of the Kāhui Tū Kaha Board of Directors, and other leaders.   Toitū Takatāpui is a name that speaks to the enduring existence of tāngata Takatāpui. A name that we humbly accept as a constant reminder of the history of Aotearoa and of the responsibility we hold to extend manaakitanga on behalf of Ngāti Whātua. Toitū Takatāpui is a name that grounds us on this whenua and honours those who went before us. Colonisation brought restricting constructs of gender and sex to these lands but our history also teaches us that it is possible for us to integrate difference in mana-enhancing ways.   We are honoured to receive this name. We see it is a reminder – Ka mua, ka muri, we should look to the past to inform the future. The enduring existence of Takatāpui will power our efforts to advocate for the safety and wellbeing of all rainbow communities at work. Ngā mihi to Pam from Rainbow Tick for facilitating the Rainbow 101 training for Tū Ora online 🏳️🌈 As part of our recently launched Rainbow Strategy, we had over 50 kaimahi attend online to cover the foundation understanding about the Rainbow community, a brief history in Aotearoa and different genders and sexual expressions, including pronouns. Awesome turn out - thanks team!

Accreditation with Rainbow Tick recognises the dedicated efforts to implement and maintain inclusive practices. By fostering an environment where all employees can bring their authentic selves to work, the well-being of all is further enhanced. The benefits of these inclusive practices have been continuously demonstrated through our member organisations. This month we celebrate Alcon NZ and Ember Korowai Takitini on their first-time accreditation. Although Alcon NZ is one of our newest members to join Rainbow Tick, their inclusive practices had already begun prior to joining, with policies and practices already embedded into their overall diversity and inclusion strategies. Strategic planning is also a key part of Ember Korowai Takitini ’s inclusive practices by ensuring resources are provided as a gateway for Rainbow competency to ensure that their mahi reflect acceptance, safety, respect and inclusion. These foundations ensure that they are able to provide meaningful support for Rainbow communities. Strategic planning as a priority helps to guide the implementation and delivery of inclusive practices as demonstrated by our member organisations. Ka nui te mihi Alcon and Ember Korowai Takitini. We look forward to being a part of your journey over the coming year. Reaccreditation: Tonkin + Taylor, Anderson Lloyd, Chapman Tripp and Eye Institute, continue their mahi of inclusion and developments of work that include varieties of external engagement, internal education and symbolic representation of inclusive spaces. In these past two months, all three  have achieved reaccreditation which also reflects the importance of including diversity and inclusion for Rainbow communities as part of organisational strategic planning. Ka nui te pai ki a koutou Tonkin + Taylor, Anderson Lloyd, Chapman Tripp and Eye Institute. We are excited to see the positive impacts from your inclusive practices continue to be developed.

  • Waikato-based artist Zena Elliot (Ngāti Awa, Ngāi te Rangi, Te Whānau ā Apānui, Ngāti Rangitihi) designed this artwork for Rainbow Tick as a visual representation of the kaupapa of our mahi. Zena Elliot's kōrero on this artwork: This design incorporates the colours pink and green, expanding on the diverse representations of these two colours that seamlessly interact with various shapes, lines, and forms. This compositional relationship symbolises the diversity that forms the manawa of unity, no matter the shape, size, or colour, there is a space. The various shapes and colours embodied within the design celebrate our diverse perspectives, experiences, and communities. Abstract symbols of growth emerge from the foreground and background of the artwork to encourage a supportive environment so that everyone can grow and flourish. The interlocking lines and spaces represent a place of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga, a safe space to nurture and to be your authentic selves. The lines represent the support and kindness of a collective unity, and each line can symbolise an individual and their connection and contribution to the community. Enclosed is a symbol of strength, wisdom and protection expressed through the form of a kaitiaki that embodies the diverse qualities of an individual and their interconnectedness to the wider community. The colours of pink and green blend together at the centre of the design to represent inclusiveness and diversity. The overall artwork illustrates different environments, values and characteristics through colour, shape, and form. The colour green holds space in a landscape of diverse pinks, while the colour pink also holds space in a landscape of green. These two colours bring warmth, compassion, growth and renewal to the design and promote how diversity and inclusiveness thrive in the right environment. • Rainbow Tick Education Team members attended Ember Korowai Takitini’s certification celebration at the beginning of August at Ember’s Ōtāhuhu office. Since 2023, Ember has made notable progress in several areas, including implementing a ‘Gender Identity Transitioning at Work’ policy and providing gender-neutral toilets at various sites. Other key achievements include enhancing recruitment practices by updating their Rainbow-inclusion commitment on the Careers page and inviting applicants to share their pronouns in the application process. Ember’s Rainbow Committee has regularly met to share ideas, plan events, and support these initiatives. Congratulations to Ember on achieving its first Rainbow Tick certification!🌈
