Being an expert in your field is valuable, but it doesn’t necessarily make you an effective coach. Why? Because great coaching is about building solid relationships, and that’s not always straightforward. One significant barrier to successful coaching relationships is differing communication styles, which can lead to misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and frustration. Here’s a three-step formula to bridge that gap: 1. Know your style 🪞 Self-awareness is crucial. Understanding your own communication preferences and style is always the right place to start. After all, you need to understand yourself before you can understand others. 2. Understand their style 🔍 Try to identify the communication style of the person you’re coaching. Being familiar with some established communication models (such as DARE) can be a helpful starting point and make the next step easier. 3.
