In partnership with Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, we've just completed a major deployment of 7 million kūtai (green-lipped mussels) in Motuora and Martins Bay. This collective effort aims to build our knowledge on how to restore the mauri of the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkpapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi, by bringing back soft-sediment kūtai habitats. Guided by the maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar) and extensive knowledge from Ngāti Manuhiri of their rohe, this kaupapa is a real testament to the value of collaboration and the joy that comes from kotahitanga - working together. We also want to recognise the amazing attributes of the kūtai - a small creature that punches above its weight and is such a vital part of our marine ecosystem. Time is ticking! Only five days left to submit your feedback on the proposed two-year closure for mussel harvesting in Ōhiwa Harbour, Bay of Plenty. Te Runanga o Ngati Awa have done the hard mahi to restore the kūtai population and now the proposed closure area is designed to allow the kūtai to recover further without the pressures of harvesting. As efforts ramp up to control one of the most significant marine invaders in recent years, our team, along with SNOOPY, recently partnered with Ngāti Hei ki Wharekaho for a ROV training session. This partnership marks a step forward in advancing our ROV capabilities, enhancing our ability to monitor and surveil Exotic Caulerpa effectively. Huge mihi to Ngāti Hei for their warm welcome and support.
