#TUKUOHAUPDATE Introducing one of last year's Tonganui Scholars, Kayleb Himiona, who has been pioneering the area of aquaculture research for kākāriki kutai and the wider mussel industry. Some highlights of this kaupapa include: 👉🏽 Continuous monitoring within the Whangape Harbor gaining insights and testing methods of spat removal. 👉🏽 Research exploring sustainable and effective methods for removing spat from spat ropes to optimise seed supply 👉🏽 Collaboration with kaupapa Māori spat farms and organisations to accelerate research objectives. Taukuri e! Te mamae o roto, kua mū tō reo. Kua kore anō e rongo I ō Kupu ārahi ki te tini o Māori mā, nāu anō I whakapakari, Nāu anō I hono ki tō rātou Māoritanga. Kei te Kahurangi e moe, e moe kia au tō moe. With great sadness, we remember Dame Mabel June Hinekahukura Mariu. Our founding Chair of Te Whānau o Waipareira. She was a tireless advocate for Māori and the community. Dame June dedicated her life to uplifting Māori, particularly in youth, justice, education, and support for women. Her legacy includes her work as a teacher, her leadership here at Te Whānau o Waipareira, her roles in Māori netball, and her contributions to the Māori Women’s Welfare League. A former Silver Ferns captain and national representative in sports, Dame June was a true leader both on and off the court. Her impact will be deeply missed. Ka korowaitia tō whānau e noho pani nei, ki ngā tauwhirotanga o te wāhi ngaro. Arohanui ki te whānau pani ❤️

    | Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa | Whiria te tāngata | Weaving people together | Reimaging partnership and collaboration in Aotearoa New Zealand |

"Dream like you have nothing to lose!" - Mathew Scobie Puta ki Tua: Remembering the future Dr Eruera Tarena (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-a-Apanui) Amorangi: Māori in Governance Summit 2024 in Wellington last week was one of those summits where you didn't realise how much you needed to hear/rehear whakaaro māori until you got home, processed all the mātauranga you had been immersed in, and then thought about how it applied to your/our mahi. The timing couldn't be more perfect Tapuwae Roa as it was exactly what we all needed (all 800 of us, including online whānau), and even though we shouldn't have favourites, my top two kaikōrero were: 🌟 Eruera Tarena - His kōrero was on "Puta ki Tua: Remembering the future". In the past, every time I was at hui where Eruera was speaking, I either missed it or was a kaimahi and didn't get the chance to sit down and listen. This was probably the most poignant, thought-provoking, next-level presentation I have heard in years. Key insights: 🌟 How do we shift the frame? Move from incrementalism to transformationalism? Eru reflected on a number of different examples from our recent history in Aotearoa about how we could make that transition or re-make it in some instances, e.g. Te Kohanga Reo, Ngāi Tahu 'Te Kerēme' claim. 🌟 As Māori, we interpret time in 'whakapapa'; therefore, our intergenerational thinking needs to focus on the 'direction', not the 'destination'. For those of us who have had this kōrero with our tauiwi whānau and colleagues, and we lose them in the first thirty seconds, I now have some flash kupu and metaphors to help aid understanding. 🌟 "If we want something more than we have, we need to grow our collective capacity to imagine an alternative and use our power and position to bring this potential to life." 🌟 Rebuild our ability to dream and the importance of stepping into our own rangatiratanga. I have found this challenging recently. It's a good reminder, and I'm back on the waka. 🌟 Tina Porou - Her kōrero was on "Intergenerational change must be forged in the fire: Māori governance as a platform to transform the state of our Taiao." I loved the wisdom she brought as a wāhine Māori governor and her knowledge of our Taiao. Also, embracing her 'Hine-nui-te-pō' alter ego (Willie is whanaunga, so this made me laugh) and being a 'raging hapū-ist'. Key insights: 🌟 The importance of participating in leadership, not necessarily governance. 🌟 We can't economic development our way out of climate change. 🌟 We need to look at "taiao" centred economies and strategies. 🌟 Be a better uri - Think long term and what is needed beyond a $20 dividend. An honourable mention to Bayden as well for being so 'Kahungunu' that it was like being at home. Id write more, but Im about to run out of characters. Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa. ❤️ #amorangi2024 #maoriingovernance #aotearoa #newzealand
