We help businesses all over New Zealand connect with the best IT & Digital talent.

In Episode 6 of the Rewired Consulting Podcast, we were joined by Liz Cawson who is Head of IT Operations and Business Engagement at Tower Insurance. We discuss her early career working on a Service Desk and how that put her on the track to where she is today. Originally from the UK, she explains why she wanted to get away from the rat race of London to move to NZ and how she found the transition. We find out about her passion for IT Service and Operations and how she moved into people focused leadership roles. Liz discusses how she was able to progress into leadership roles in a male dominated industry but also highlights how far NZ has come over the last few years with diversity and inclusion. She talks through some of the innovative projects she been involved in at Tower and how she has built a high performing team as well as how she sees the future of Tech in NZ. This was a great chat, and we hope you enjoy. Sean Patterson Rewired Consulting https://lnkd.in/gCKZ6gXa

Product Manager John Whitta has been a part of many historic moments at Tower but now we’re celebrating John’s own special milestone, 50 years of service!    Checkout Terry Gangcuangco's story via Insurance Business New Zealand about John’s journey at Tower here https://lnkd.in/gX72V5ky   "It’s important to adapt to new ways of working. My advice to younger generations or those just starting out in insurance is, give it a go, give it time, get involved and be curious    Working at Tower, you are in a family environment. The names, the leadership, and the people have all changed throughout the years, but the values here have stayed consistent.    It has always been important to me that the company upheld values that aligned with my own and that has always been the case – including treating our people and our customers with empathy, and respect." - John.   Thank you, John for your outstanding commitment to Tower staff and our customers over 50 years of amazing service! This is what it’s all about! Brilliant interview here https://lnkd.in/g_NHZ58c with 2024 Tower Climate Change Scholarship winner, Maia Waudby on Waatea NEWS this morning. We’re so proud and pleased to announce Maia (pictured) and Hannah Dagger, as this year’s Tower Climate Change Scholarship recipients. Both Maia and Hannah are dedicating their studies towards mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on Māori and Pacific communities.   Tower has supported the The University of Waikato’s Bachelor of Climate Change since 2021, with three $5,000 scholarships available each year to assist students studying the degree. As a Kiwi and Pacific insurer, we’re acutely aware of the climate risks faced by island communities. We created this scholarship to help support the next generation of climate leaders to pursue solutions and initiatives they’re passionate about.   Listening to Maia explain her ambitions, purpose and motivation this morning is truly what it’s all about for us at Tower. As a business, we’re inspired by Maia and Hannah’s passion for preparing our communities in the face of climate change - a stellar example of our future being in good hands.   Thank you to host Dale Husband and Waatea News for giving rangatahi in the climate space a platform!   #TowerNZ #TowerPacific #insurance #climatechange

Meet Roisin Yates! Junior Full Stack Engineer at Tower 👋 "I had just finished my BA in Art History during Covid and had been accepted into an MA course in Museum Conservation in Melbourne. I chose to do an internship in New Zealand before the course started due to lockdowns and became involved in the engineering side of things. When the start date rolled around, I chose to stay in engineering and swapped the MA for a 17-week Dev Academy course. I joined Tower at the very beginning of my career in engineering, fresh out of the Dev Academy, so I was still very new. I’ve really appreciated how Tower has a culture of fostering learning and curiosity. A repeated mantra in my team is that there are no dumb questions. I feel like I’ve been able to learn and grow so much due to the encouragement of everyone in engineering. I’ve been given opportunities to work on technologies that I’ve always wanted to learn, and areas that interest me.    One huge example of Tower’s support is through my interest in web accessibility. I've just finished a course that qualifies me to evaluate web accessibility on a site, which I wouldn't have been able to do without this supportive culture. With my background in customer service, museum conservation, and art restoration, I was always passionate about making art and history accessible too. Reflecting on my journey, changing careers was the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, but it’s also the best decision I’ve ever made, and I’ve never looked back." #TowerNZ #TowerPacific #insurance #ourpeoplecomefirst

Did you know that insurers are responsible for part of the emissions related to insured customer assets under the XRB Climate Standards? This means that the assets we insure will need to become more energy efficient and support our customers (and us) to achieve a low emission, climate resilient future. So, how do we do this? In the past few years, we have insured greater numbers of EVs, hybrids and other e-mobility as customers increasingly adopt more sustainable means of transport, but we want to turbo charge this. This is the challenge we've set three Bachelor of Climate Change students from The University of Waikato (UoW). Third-year students Krista, Morgan and Maia along with their climate science lecturer Dr Luke Harrington, joined us for a briefing on the project, from members of our underwriting and sustainability teams. We talked about how insurance works, how we calculate insured emissions, our current emissions profile and how insurers globally are tackling this challenge. The students will come back to us with a proposal on the most impactful opportunities to decarbonise, considering the needs of our customers and other stakeholders along with the broader business, political and societal system we work within. Tower has been involved with UoW’s world first Bachelor of Climate Change since its inception, supporting students to complete their studies with the Tower Climate Change Scholarship. It was especially exciting to have Morgan, a past scholarship recipient, in the office working on this project. We look forward to sharing more about this year’s recipients soon!
