Growing Māori and Pacific leaders for a greater Aotearoa.

About us

At TupuToa, our vision is to grow Māori and Pacific leaders for a greater Aotearoa. Our journey started in 2016 with 28 Māori and Pacific interns studying at tertiary level who were placed within various corporate roles in Auckland. We now anticipate an intern cohort of 350+ across Aotearoa and abroad, within corporate, government and community organisations. As an organisation we look to address the persistent inequalities facing our communities and disrupt intergenerational disadvantage. We work to reduce entry and advancement barriers which are biased against Māori and Pacific communities and support organisations in successfully recruiting and onboarding Māori and Pacific peoples in to the business world of mahi.

Happy Tongan Language Week! 🇹🇴 This week, we’ve embraced the theme: ‘E tu’uloa ‘a e lea faka-Tongá ‘o ka lea’aki ‘i ‘api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-‘a-kāingá — The Tongan Language will be sustainable when used at home, church, and in the wider community. 🏠⛪️🌏 As a team, we learned the word Lotolahi (Lo-to-la-hi), meaning bold, brave, and determined. 💪 Let’s use it to encourage each other to overcome challenges and achieve our goals 💫 Hope everyone has enjoyed their celebrations this week.

No better way to wrap up Cook Islands Language Week than with some delicious Kaikai with the team, including the famous Cook Islands donuts, mainese, and sweet poke. A perfect way to end a week of celebration! 🌺🌴🇨🇰

Happy Cook Islands Language Week! We’ve enjoyed exploring the rich culture of the Cook Islands and have been learning some of the beautiful language this week. This year’s theme, ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – ‘Ātui’ia au ki te vaka o tōku matakeinanga - Connect me to the canoe of my tribe,’ reminds us of the many ways to stay connected to our heritage. In addition to speaking the language, we can also celebrate through traditional dance, music, art, and sharing stories. Join us in keeping this vibrant culture alive for future generations! 🌺🛶✨

Some beautiful reflections from Saige Mamanu, an alumni of our Kia Tupu Kia Toa leadership programme. “No, 'changed' wouldn’t be the right word—'transformed' would. The amount of transformation I have experienced, from the first wānanga at Te Piiti Marae to our final Celebration Night, has given me more than a lifetime’s worth of mātauranga and whānau. Kia Tupu Kia Toa has gifted me: 1. The confidence to proudly embrace my Māori and Pasifika heritage. It provided me with an environment full of like-minded individuals and helped me foster lifelong friendships. 2. A kete overflowing with knowledge and tools essential for my journey of becoming a proud Māori and Pasifika leader. 3. A mākoi, traditionally used for separating muka from the harakeke leaf. With the mākoi from Kia Tupu Kia Toa and the harakeke passed down by my tūpuna, the weaving of my life’s journey becomes possible.” Saige sums up her experience, “I am ready to soar and make a meaningful impact in my community and beyond.” If you want to experience the same type of transformation with the Kia Tupu Kia Toa programme, make sure you sign up for our next cohort 👇 https://lnkd.in/gkSCUchC

"As much as life doesn’t go the way you expected, or have the challenges you go through, you have the option to still make it fulfilled." Leonie Ati's story is a powerful example of resilience and determination After losing her father at 19, she stepped up to support her family, leaving school early and starting work at The Warehouse. Despite the odds, Leonie rose through the ranks, from a temporary worker to a manager overseeing a large team. Leonie has since been able to invest into her leadership growth through the Kia Tupu Kia Toa leadership programme, a place where she found a sense of belonging and purpose. Leonie reminds us that with the right support and mentality, you can overcome any challenge and achieve your dreams. Looking to advance your own path? “Ko au te hiahia nui o ōku tupuna (I am my ancestors' greatest wish).” - Cassie A'uvaa Cassie’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience and cultural rediscovery. Raised by a single māmā in Ranui, she navigated the challenges of balancing her Māori, Samoan, and Pākehā worlds. Despite feeling out of place, her mother's support and her determination led her to become the first in her whānau to attend university and later secure a role as Kaitohutohu Matua Māori (Senior Advisor Māori) in government. Cassie’s participation in the Kia Tupu Kia Toa leadership programme marked a transformative chapter. She joined to explore leadership in a way that embraced her unique identity. The programme helped her realize that true leadership lies in authenticity, resilience, and creating safe spaces for others. Join the next cohort of Kia Tupu Kia Toa and embark on your own journey of growth and leadership. Be the change your ancestors dreamed of and the leader of tomorrow.
