A Decade of Debt is the next Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies seminar in the Poverty, by Design: The systems that hold families in poverty, and what needs to change seminar series. Financial mentors across Aotearoa see whānau struggling due to private and government debt deductions from their benefits, leaving them without enough essentials. Join us this evening as Jake Lilley, Senior Policy Advisor at FinCap, explores how a 2014 policy change turned Work and Income’s systems into a large-scale conveyor belt for private debt collection. Jake will also discuss how benefit incomes are being diminished by government debt, and FinCap's recommendations for addressing these poverty drivers. Jake Lilley has vast experience in consumer protection, working with over 800 financial mentors across Aotearoa. He has been a member of the Responsible Lending Code Advisory Group, the Energy Hardship Reference Group, and has worked with the Consumer Action Law Centre in Australia. Race relations—it’s a term dubbed “outdated and imprecise” by Lara Greaves, an associate professor in Politics at Te Herenga Waka. “What we are really talking about are Māori-Crown relations,” she says. In an article for The Conversation, Lara makes the case for why it’s time to consign the term “race relations” to history.
