🏆 UC Engineering PhD student awarded Young Investigator Prize at ENOC 2024 👏 PhD candidate Seigan Hayashi has just returned from a successful visit to Europe where he was awarded the Young Investigator Prize at the European Nonlinear Dynamics Conference (ENOC 2024) held from 22-26 July in Delft, The Netherlands. ENOC bring together the international community engaged in fundamental research as well as applications of nonlinear dynamics in physics, mathematics, and engineering. Seigan was one of 15 shortlisted candidates in the young scientist category to present at the conference. His presentation “Control-based continuation of an externally excited MEMS self-oscillator” was ultimately awarded the top prize. Seigan’s trip to Europe also included a visit to Imperial College London, University of Exeter, University of Bristol as well as Leibniz University in Hanover, Germany. “Meeting fellow researchers working in your area is not just inspiring but it creates wonderful opportunities to cross-collaborate, share experiences and build global networks – which are vital in research.” Seigan credits his success to the support he has been receiving from his supervisors throughout his PhD journey: Stefanie Gutschmidt (UC Mechanical Engineering); Rua Murray (UC Maths & Stats); and Bernd Krauskopf (University of Auckland, Department of Mathematics), as well as fellow PhD colleague Chris Cameron (UC Mechanical Engineering). In high school Seigan always enjoyed maths and physics, but it was UC’s MATH199 course which enabled him to pursue additional mathematics through his Mechatronics program, sparking a passion in dynamical systems.   “As a high school student, I got so much out of the programme and I am now in the position to pass my passion onto younger students and have been a tutor for the past 5 years.” #UCEngExcellence #ENOC #ENOC2024 University of Canterbury School of Mathematics and Statistics

UC Engineering students helped successfully organise and deliver the IEEE Australian New Zealand Student and Young Professional Congress (ANZSCON) at Auckland University of Technology. It was a fantastic event filled with inspiring presentations, cutting-edge research, and opportunities to network and collaborate. Congratulations to UC students Connor Grant, Matthew Suter and Jorden Nom for winning the top spots in the Pecha-Kucha Presentation section 👏

Last week, our Chair Treasa Glubb, Vice-Chair Gemma Aveyard, and Sponsorship Coordinator Leonardo Bolstad, as committee members, helped successfully organise the IEEE Australian New Zealand Student and Young Professional Congress (ANZSCON) at Auckland University of Technology. This was an opportunity for us to collaborate with the IEEE Student Branch | UoA and the IEEE AUT Student Branch for the first time. We look forward to working with them in the future! The Congress kicked off with video addresses from IEEE President-Elect Professor Kathleen Kramer and IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region) Director Professor Lance Chun Che Fung. Out of 50 participants, regardless of distance 14 were from the University of Canterbury, some partially sponsored by IEEE New Zealand South Section. We also had the pleasure of inviting our Dean of Engineering, Professor Saurabh Sinha, who shared the opportunities that IEEE presents to student branches, such as through EPICS in IEEE and the IEEE Foundation . As the theme was "Leading Your Future," we also invited Isha Patel, Team Principal of UCM - University of Canterbury Motorsport, as a panelist to share how IEEE can support student clubs by opening sub-branches. Furthermore, we had the privilege of inviting Associate Professor Yongfu LI as a speaker, who shared insights on the opportunities within the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) in New Zealand and Australia, highlighting the growing prospects of IEEE CASS in both countries. We are proud to share that the top spots in the Pecha-Kucha Presentation section were all won by our students, including: - Connor Grant, winner of the Undergraduate Category - Matthew Suter, winner of the Postgraduate Category - Jorden Nom, runner-up of the Postgraduate Category We look forward to increasing collaboration nationally and internationally in preparation for IEEE TENSYMP, hosted at the University of Canterbury next year!

🌟 Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day Series 🌟 Meet Dr Clemency Montelle, an inspiring mathematician who is making waves in the world of STEM! 📊✨ Highlights of Clemency’s Journey: 🏛️ Probably the most prestigious place she’s ever given an invited colloquium: L’Académie des Sciences et L’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres on June 17, 2015. And she did it all in French! 👩🏫 Delivered an electrifying talk at Ethiraj Women’s College in Chennai to an audience of 400 female math and engineering majors. The atmosphere was incredible, and the faculty were all female too! This event, on December 14, 2017, showcased the special magic that happens when women support each other in STEM. "Being a mathematician brings me a deep sense of satisfaction through the process of abstraction. Mathematics is a subject deeply grounded in curiosity, driven by questions about the world, and as much about providing answers as it is about asking them. I also love that my role has the scope for societal impact, advocacy, and change. We are at a particular point in history where this is increasingly important. I am deeply motivated to champion a more gender-equitable environment in mathematics, which has positive outcomes for all. When a group is more diverse, everyone benefits!" Let's celebrate the incredible contributions of mathematicians like Clemency, who are paving the way for future generations in STEM! 🌍👩💻💪 #WomenInEngineering #MathematicsHeroes #InternationalWomensDay #STEM #Inspiration #Empowerment #EngineeringExcellencen #ucnz #ucengineering University of Canterbury Saurabh Sinha Pedro Lee
