Read the Fine Print

I have been a platinum charge card member for over 20 years. One of the benefits is the $200 aud dinning credit that can be used overseas. I recently dinned at a participating restaurant. I asked my partner to use their card as I did not have my card (primary) with me. A few days later I checked my account to see if credit had been applied and it had not. I then read fine print on dinning credit and realised only primary card be used to take advantage of dinning credit. Please everyone with this benefit don’t get caught out like me. I contacted American Express and they refused to do anything about it at all. Very disappointing indeed.

Statements arrive a day before payment…

Statements arrive a day before payment due which does not give any time to transfer funds from other accounts to transfer for large payments.
Took this up with a complaint and was told the statements are sent out on 3rd of the month but mine never arrive for just over fourteen days.
Customer services say they are posted out promptly so blame Royal Mail for a fourteen day late delivery each month.Amex won’t take the blame and very unhelpful.
They take a yearly fee which they manage to take quickly but are very unhelpful with matters they want to preside over and rule as no complain as a long term customer.
Renowned also to be slow to pay retailers hanging onto funds to gain more for themselves that’s why a lot of retailers and companies don’t accept Amex

American Express is one of the worst companies

The French branch of American Express is the worst company I can think of. Their customer service sucks completely - already registering for a platinum card was a 6 month back and forth exercise. After now a year, I contacted them because a website where I had paid with Amex claimed that they did not get the money - but they must have got it - Amex confirmed. BUT at the same time they asked me to redo the whole evaluation process of having an Amex Platinum card - 3 month payslip plus plus plus. I think they are sick in the head - I cancelled my card now - and then got an SMS to wire transfer the remaining amount to be paid - although in my webaccount it says that the amount will be direct debit as usual. A company that you better avoid if you want to live in peace.

Won't increase limit, won't tell me why

Refuses to increase the credit limit on my card, even though I have a perfect credit rating and have made all repayments on time for over 12 months.
Speaking to their team on the phone, they tell me that their credit increase team makes the decision, but they aren't able to tell me why the decision was made and aren't able to put me through to that team.

Amex lost 3 cards and did not even aplogizr

My Amex was coming to exchange in July 2024 and I got an email vonfirming that. It did not come and I contacted Amex Finland. They sent a new card. This process was repeated *three* times and the card just did not come. Finally, angry enough, I contacted Amex Finland to not trust the post/DHL anymore but deliver the card by taxi with a photo proving that it goes to my mailbox. Even after *three* unsuccessful deliveries, Amex could not deviate from their serviceless practice and after 40 years of membership I saw no other option but to csncel my membership. Did I get an apology? No. Now, two weeks after cancelling my card, DHL brought one of the missing cards.

Excellent experience with Amex

I'm really surprised to read all the negative reviews.

Our experience with Amex was excellent. We have 5 Amex cards across our family, both personal and business. The cards provide excellent earnings rates, the points can be moved to 6 different travel programs.

The only drawdown is that acceptance is less than Visa, but we are still able to use it in about 80% of the places we shop.

We are also very pleased with the customer service.

Have been a Platinum Card Member for 10 years

Have been a Platinum Card Member for the past 10 years. Have never missed a payment. This week the card was rejected while making a purchase, and I was told my card was under review. A few weeks later, I received a text message stating my card was suspended following their internal review. No discussions on what the issue was, just you are finished. I am a high net worth individual, who takes pride in always paying on time so was stunned that they suspended my card. When asked to speak with a manager, no one wanted to talk to me. I had promises that a supervisor of the review team would call on two occasions but no one called. I would not recommend Amex to anyone. The customer service is horrible, and I was embarrassed by having to use another card when they suspended me without any notification. Couple that with the higher fees they charge, and I would say find another company that is more customer focused

The card is useless as not accepted…

The card is useless as not accepted work wide. Even in the UK there are many shops that do not accept any American Express cards.
Also, their customer service do not support you for any transactions made to any fraudulent seller. Very poor.

Went to make a payment online

Went to make a payment online - my Bank (Barclays) is grayed out and I cannot make a payment from that bank for some unknown reason.

I went to 'chat' - it says 'login to chat', so I login again and then go to 'start chat' and it takes me to a page that says 'login to start chat'.

Hard to believe such a big company has such utter trash for a web page.

AmEx Worst Bank/Credit Card Doing Business Today

Well i now understand why people rated American Express 1 star 78% and 5 star only 14%. If it were up to me i would give them 0 stars! They are the absolute WORST credit card you could ever hope to deal with and the absolute WORST customer service doing business today! Not exaggerating either, the customer service is absolutely useless and does NOTHING to assist EVER! I cant tell you how many times i have called about the same charge disputed on my credit card and the morons have no clue what they are doing! Their website is the worst too. Dont take my word, take a look yourself. When you click on Feedback its just a box that opens so people can vent, but it doesnt go anywhere, and they never know who sent it, which means they will never fix the errors because they dont know who sent it nor do they care, that alone is proof of what i am saying, they do NOT value customers. I have disputed very few things on my card, but its an issue every single time. They close the dispute, NEVER tell the card holder, and never give a reason as to why. Then i have to reopen the dispute. Its a complete waste of time and gets no where! Its a typical example of a company that has grown too large and now stops caring about customer service, and gets by on their past name. Because in the past this was a great card to have in your wallet. Now its useless like the company. Its not accepted at many common everyday places and i find more and more places everyday, they do not allow this card because the greedy crooks charge too much so merchants block their card usage. You cant send them a message because their website never works correctly. They have NO live chat. I mean just look at their ratings, they dont even get 50% of the people saying good things about them! I stopped using their card and i encourage people to NEVER open an account with American Express, ANY kind of account, you will be sorry you did. My card is paid off, and i am just waiting to handle the open disputes i have for some charges and then i cant wait to close this cc account! I have even sent them messages through 3rd parties like FB and Messenger, and NEVER received a response! Worst bank, worst credit card company in business today! In fact this review would have been a lot shorter if i was just asked to say what good things they do, which is NOLTHING. i literally cant think of one good thing they do!!! The rewards for using this card are not even good! I get 2 to 3 times better rewards opening any new Visa or MC today! Avoid this company, they will not be around in the future!

I would give a zero star if I could.

I would give a zero star if i had it. I just wasted my time filling out and application with this pathetic company only to get declined. They did not even ask for additional information. They called me to verify my application and charged the entire rent being paid by me when in fact it is shared. The staff who picked up my call needs to get retrained on customer service. I do not have any debt. It does not matter to me that the card was declined but i felt bad the way the agent handled my call like i am begging them for a card. The worst service.

Useless customer service

Useless customer service, they have changed my credit limit immediately after I made a payment towards the account when I was trying to make a payment for services. And I can't pay for the services now because the company has send me a notification seconds after my payment has failed. This is a fraudulent act as the company used to send a notification letter 1 months in advance of any credit limit changes. Now they do it whenever they want. No use in this company services and credit card as they are not reliable. The worst customer service I had in 10 years and the have not sorted my issues. I will not be using this company services in the future. And do not recommend to anyone. FRADULENT COMPANY.

AMEX refunded a customer for a $5995…

AMEX refunded a customer for a $5995 sale from my business three times. There is almost no way to address a problem like this through AMEX. The customer ordered a custom made item and when I called him to ship it in a timely fashion, he no longer wanted it. My website states custom made items are not returnable, I did however offer a store credit and later in the conversation agreed to refund him 100% just to be amenable. He immediately disputed the charge with AMEX and the also gave him a refund. So now my little business is out $11,990 USD, and I'm stuck with his custom made order. MERCHANTS, DUMP AMEX FROM THE WAY YOU ACCEPT PAYMENT AND DO BUSINESS WITH ANOTHER COMPANY!!

No service

Telstra, e bay , Mazda,Ford and Toyota don’t take Amex . Princess cruises charges 2.3% to pay with Amex. Is it really worth paying $1500 a year to have an Amex card?

Hopeless Dispute Team. Betrayed. Disgusted.

Been a member for 5years. Their dispute team is the worst. Tried to dispute a transaction of $300 for a lost key in a hotel which was overpriced/overkill.. They decided to close the dispute because the merchant showed them a receipt and said, there was not enough evidence on my side that it was not reasonable to be charged $300 for a lost key. The dispute personnel even went as far as asking me the details about my 30year old door barrel and why I didn't complain about this in the first place, etc.. Dispute personnel turned out to be toxic and acted like this customer is very dumb. Like seriously, train your customer service team. All they can say is - - they empathise with me and that they value my membership...but will refuse to dispute the charge because really, they don't value their customer. I really really reaaaaally hope the dispute staff experience this inconvenience in her life so she knows how it feels to be betrayed by a company you initially trusted in your travel and feel hopeless because you're talking to dumb people. I can't wait to close my account for good and transfer to a better big bank. I don't even want to recommend Amex to any of my friends anymore. They used to ask me for tips. I felt disgusted to even recommend this previously after this first hand experience. No. The security part was fraud. They aren't on their customers side.
