    Smart cities are in development around the world to tackle urbanization challenges. Smart solutions are being developed to optimize scarce resources, reduce service cost, improve service quality and improve the livelihood of city residents. With smart city infrastructure getting digitized and remotely accessible, the risk of cyber security cannot be overlooked. This article describes the technical and non-technical challenges smart cities are facing with regards to cyber security attacks. The article outlines design requirements that should be considered when designing a secure smart city. The requirements are overarching technical, operational, social, safety, legal and usability domains. In addition, the article proposes cyber defense maturity levels for smart cities and describes threat models relevant to each maturity level.

Such realization requires continuous monitoring and observation. This is not a trivial task. Thus, automatic network monitoring tools are deployed to monitor and analyze the traffic trespassing network devices. There is an increasing demand for automated network monitoring tools and selecting a suitable candidate can become a challenging task. Some computerized network monitoring tools and systems are available, including expensive proprietary/closed-source solutions and Free Open Source Software (FOSS) systems. Three of the most popular FOSS network monitoring systems are: Nagios, OpenNMS and Zabbix. They are solid competitors to the available proprietary solutions.

This paper highlights the results of a smartphone security awareness study. The paper presents some shocking findings and outlines effective recommendations to mitigate smartphone security threats and risks. The recommendations are targeting individual end-users as well as government/private agencies that have an integral role in smartphone security awareness.

    A group of senior students majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University were motivated by the lack of worldwide IPv6 network deployment and embraced the task of designing and implementing the first IPv6 test-bed in an educational institute in the Sultanate of Oman.     A group of senior students majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University were motivated by the lack of worldwide IPv6 network deployment and embraced the task of designing and implementing the first IPv6 test-bed in an educational institute in the Sultanate of Oman. Under my supervision, the project team managed to successfully have test-bed up and running. The test-bed aimed at exploring IPv6 implementation in wired and wireless environments as well as Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) setups. The team configured routers in the test-bed to establish a tunnel (6to4 tunnel) to Omantel’s IPv6 test-bed router. Through this established tunnel, the team was able to reach remote IPv6 websites such as Google IPv6 website (ipv6.google.com). Through series of tests and experiments, it was found that the performances of IPv4 and IPv6 networks are very comparable.

The pad based on Light Dependent Resistors was designed and connected to any a Personal Computer (PC) through Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection.
