ਸੂਮਰ (ਅੱਕਦੀ: ਸ਼ੂਮਰੂ; ਸੂਮਰੀ: ਕੀਂਗੀਰ) ਦੱਖਣੀ ਇਰਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਰਹਿਤਲ ਅਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਇਲਾਕਾ ਸੀ। ਸੂਮਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੋਈ 4500 ਅਤੇ 4000 ਈਸਾ ਪੂਰਵ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ ਗੈਰ-ਸਾਮੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਬਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੂਰਵ-ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਜ-ਕਲ "ਉਬੈਦੀ" ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਏ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਕਾਸ ਸਾਮਰਾ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ (ਸਕਾਫ਼ਤ) ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਏ।[1][2][3][4]
ਉਬੈਦ ਕਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਊਰੂਕ ਕਾਲ
[ਸੋਧੋ]ਉਬੈਦ ਕਾਲ (ਤਕਰੀਬਨ 6500 ਤੋਂ 3800 ਈਸਾ-ਪੂਰਵ)[5] ਇੱਕ ਪੂਰਵ-ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਕਾਲ ਏ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਰਾਕ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੀ ਕਾਰ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਊਰ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਇੱਕ ਥੇਹ ਅਲ-ਉਬੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਆ ਏ।
ਊਰੂਕ ਕਾਲ (ਤਕਰੀਬਨ 4100 ਤੋਂ 2900 ਈਸਾ-ਪੂਰਵ), ਇਸ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੂਮਰੀ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਊਰੂਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਰਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਏ। ਇਸ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ (ਕਦੀਮੀ) ਇਰਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਹਿਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਹੋਈ।[6] ਕੀਲਾਕਾਰ (Cuneiform Script) ਲਿਪੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਵੀ ਪਿਛੇਤੇ ਊਰੂਕ ਕਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਹੋਈ।
