‘Star Trek’ actress’ travel buddy busted with meth, other drugs

Too bad she couldn’t have traveled by transporter beam.

Actress Nichelle Nichols, famous for playing Lt. Uhura on the original 1960s version of “Star Trek,” was briefly detained at Los Angeles International Airport Friday.

Nichols’ younger travel companion was accused of possessing methamphetamine, drug scales and other narcotics paraphernalia in his baggage, news accounts said.

Cops discovered the contraband when the man dropped his suitcase, and the illegal items spilled out, said TMZ.com. Nichols’ rep told the Web site that the suspect was her personal assistant. Nichols was released when officers decided she was unaware that he was carrying drugs.

Nichols, 81, was headed for this weekend’s Rhode Island Comic Con, where she was to appear with fellow “Star Trek” actors William Shatner, George Takei and Walter Koenig.

Nichols’ Uhura broke racial stereotypes by playing the USS Enterprise’s communications officer.
