Chris Pratt details son’s early struggles as a preemie

2014 was something of a breakout year for Chris Pratt, but he says he scored his biggest role when he became a father two years ago.

“I’ve done all kinds of cool things as an actor — I’ve jumped out of helicopters and done some daring stunts and played baseball in a professional stadium, but none of it means anything compared to being somebody’s daddy,” the actor said at Friday’s March of Dimes Celebration of Babies luncheon in Los Angeles, reports Variety.

In August 2012, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star, 35, and wife Anna Faris‘ son Jack was born nine weeks premature. At birth, the couple’s boy weighted just 3 pounds, 12 ounces.

“That’s a decent-sized bass,” the actor joked. “Very small for a human.”

Having been born more than two months early, things were very touch-and-go for the first month of Jack’s life.

“I made promises in that moment about what kind of dad I wanted to be and I just prayed that he’d live long enough that I could keep them,” he said.

Despite warnings from doctors that their son might have special needs and need surgery to correct his eyes, Pratt says that when the couple finally got to take their son home, they had a healthy baby on their hands.

“Our Jack went from a small, helpless little squirt to a strong, smart, happy, funny, beautiful boy who loves monster trucks and ‘Daniel Tiger,’ and, believe it or not, loves vegetables. Broccoli and cherry tomatoes are his favorite foods,” the proud father gushed.

Pratt shared a picture of his happy (and healthy) family with fans on Thanksgiving.
