‘It’s Only a Play’ … but it’s in high demand!

Terrence McNally’s “It’s Only a Play” recently had a dilemma uncommon on Broadway: Demand for tickets to the hit showed no sign of slowing, but the theater where it was playing, the Schoenfeld, was promised to another show, “The Audience,” starring Helen Mirren.

So rather than shutter, “It’s Only a Play” worked out a deal to move next door to the Jacobs Theatre, starting Friday.

To mark the change of venue, the cast, including Martin Short, Matthew BroderickStockard Channing and F. Murray Abraham, will help move props, costumes and scenery from the Schoenfeld.

“We’re now calling this play, ‘It’s Only A Schlep!’” Short told Page Six.

VIPs expected at Friday’s “reopening” include Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Larry David, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathleen Turner, Regis Philbin, Tyne Daly, Delia Ephron and Joe Franklin. Some might even help Short and company move, too.
