Washington Post heir, wife divorcing after 32 years

Washington Post heir Stephen Graham is getting a divorce, and it might not be amicable.

Sources say his wife Cathy has consulted with several lawyers about how to get a fair share of Graham’s substantial assets.

“He asked her for a divorce out of nowhere. She’s in shock,” said one insider. “She doesn’t know what she wants.”

The couple, who have been together 32 years, have one teenager and one adult child. They live on East 78th Street, but she has a studio nearby, and he has his own apartment. They also have a $16 million estate on Nantucket, Mass.

Graham’s mother, Katharine, was publisher of the Washington Post in 1972 when the Watergate break-in occurred. She was instrumental in supporting editor Ben Bradlee and his reporters in exposing the burglary as the work of Richard Nixon’s operatives.

Stephen, a professor of Victorian studies at Bard College, confirmed the divorce, but declined to say anything else.

One legal expert said, “She’s entitled to an equitable share of the marital assets, but everything could be in family trusts.”
