Steven Spielberg makes Globes push for ‘Bridge of Spies’ actor

Steven Spielberg wants Mark Rylance to win a Golden Globe for his performance in “Bridge of Spies,” but he would never lobby the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., his spokesman says.

Denying a rumor that Spielberg had been personally calling up the Globe voters at home to schmooze them, Amblin Entertainment’s Marvin Levy told me: “It is absolutely absurd … it is disparaging to someone who protects his privacy and the privacy of others. It is a bridge of lies.”

Spielberg’s movie was almost completely snubbed by Globe voters. Rylance won the only nomination for the Cold War-set drama starring Tom Hanks.

“[Spielberg] really wants a Golden Globe,” said my source. “It’s like Harvey Weinstein rubbed off on him.” Weinstein is a master at campaigning for awards.

The Globes snub of Spielberg could influence Academy Award voters, who will want to rectify the slight to one of Hollywood’s most admired directors.
