If David Bowie hadn’t been a rocker, he would’ve been in theater

Life could have turned out very differently for David Bowie if he hadn’t abandoned his love for Broadway showtunes.

Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime producer and bass player, said last week in an interview on WNYC’s “Soundcheck” that Bowie — who died Sunday night — wasn’t committed to rock way back in 1969 when Visconti first met the singer in London.

“He was very much into musical theater. He had already met [‘What Kind of Fool Am I?’ co-writer] Leslie Bricusse,” Visconti said. “He told me in later years, ‘If I wasn’t successful in rock, I would have been in musical theater.’ ”
