Demi Lovato has put her money where her mouth is regarding mental health.
The “Body Say” singer is now a co-owner of CAST Centers, a Los Angeles mental health and wellness treatment facility.
Lovato, 24, revealed the news during an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning,” set to air on Sept. 11.
“It just feels good,” Lovato said. “It sounds ridiculous, but I kind of made a pact with God, and I don’t even think you’re supposed to do that, but I promised, ‘If you make me a singer one day, I’m going to use my voice for so much more than singing, and I’m going to help people with it.’”
Lovato has been outspoken about her own struggles with bipolar disorder, bulimia and addiction, most recently in a speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
In 2008, Lovato entered rehab for substance abuse, bulimia, self-harm and bipolar disorder after punching a backup dancer while on tour with the Jonas Brothers.
The singer later admitted that she “couldn’t go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine” before treatment, and previously revealed her late father also suffered from severe mental illness before his death in 2013.
In 2013, Lovato was referred to the CAST Centers for further help with depression, bulimia and substance abuse, CBS reports, and after a successful experience, she took Mike Bayer, the organization’s CEO and founder, on tour with her this summer.
Bayer noted that when he first began helping Lovato with her treatment, “[She was] very closed off,” which Lovato confirmed.
“I mean, I was a nightmare,” she admitted. “I would say the word that I want to say, but it’s so inappropriate that I can’t. And this will be on a Sunday morning, so I’m not going to say it.”
The former Disney star, who celebrated four years of sobriety in March, said taking accountability for her actions helped her escape the need to cope using “some sort of drug or with alcohol, and because of that, I’m sitting here right now, alive and more successful than I’ve ever been.”
