Shailene Woodley arrested for trespassing

Shailene Woodley was arrested Monday while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The “Divergent” star was among hundreds of protesters at a construction site in Sioux County, North Dakota, when she was busted for trespass and engaging in a riot, said Morton County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Rob Keller. The offenses are both misdemeanors and carry a maximum punishment of 30 days in jail and a $1,500 fine.

“Why am I being arrested and no one else is?” she said in a video posted to her Facebook page. “It’s because I’m well-known, it’s because I have 40,000 people watching.”

Law enforcement responded that she had “trespassed on the property,” and also, “you were identified.”

In the video, Woodley is led away with her hands restrained behind her back while fans shout, “We love you!”

But Woodley, 24, “likely won’t even reach a cell,” Cecily Fong of the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services told Page Six on Monday afternoon. Fong said “some sort of bail will be posted and she’ll post bail and get out of jail.”

Keller said 27 people were arrested during protests at two construction sites that prompted the shutdown of a state highway for several hours. No injuries were reported.

The actress engaged in what she dubbed a “peaceful protest” at a construction site for the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline project, which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe claims would destroy some of its sacred grounds. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected the tribe’s request to block the development on Sunday.

Woodley has been protesting to stop the construction of the pipeline for a few months now and has chronicled her efforts on social media.

Reps for Woodley did not immediately return requests for comment.
