Karl Lagerfeld calls Meryl Streep ‘cheap’

Meryl Streep won’t be wearing Chanel to walk the red carpet at the Oscars on Sunday.

After finding a gray embroidered couture number and requesting adjustments, Streep, nominated for Best Actress for her performance in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” pulled the plug when the brand refused to pay her to wear the dress.

“I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress,” Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld tells WWD. “Days later, a phone call came in from a member of Streep’s camp: ‘Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us.'”

Lagerfeld sniped, “A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?'”

This is Streep’s 20th nomination.
