Pentatonix member announces he’s leaving the group

Pentatonix is losing an instrument.

In an emotional Facebook video post on Friday, singer Avi Kaplan announced his decision to leave the a cappella group, saying he became overwhelmed by the organization’s “fast pace.”

“Throughout my career with Pentatonix, that pace has always been a really big struggle for me, it’s been extremely hard for me to not see my family or friends when I need to or when they need to see me,” the 28-year-old said, while sitting alongside his somber-looking group members. “It’s been really hard for me to not just escape to nature when I’m feeling really overwhelmed or when I just need time for myself.”

Pentatonix found fame on NBC’s “The Sing-Off” in 2011. Since their inception, the group has became known for viral videos of covers and holiday music along with original music.

“I would never want to inhibit any type of success that we have because I truly do believe in everything that we’ve done and everything that they will do,” he added of remaining members Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kristin Maldonado and Kevin Olusola. “I just know that I can no longer continue at this pace and so I have to do what’s best for the group and I have to do what’s best for me.”

Kaplan assured fans that he will finish scheduled shows — in venues throughout Asia and the United States — with the group, and will continue to make music.

Reps for the music group did not immediately return requests for additional comment.
