‘13 Reasons Why’ actor addresses show’s controversy

13 Reasons Why” actor Tom Everett Scott says the controversial Netflix show is actually helping some teens come forward.

“I think that a lot of conversation is happening now because of the show and what it presents as life for high schoolers and kids,” Scott told Page Six at the Turner upfront presentation this week. “I just hope in the big picture that something positive comes out of it.”

Page Six reported last month that some schools were pushing back against the series for “romanticizing” teen suicide, which is graphically depicted on screen. At some schools, letters have gone home to parents warning them that the show “could easily trigger feelings of distress in vulnerable viewers.”

Other schools have condemned the show for not mentioning mental health and options for treatment.

Scott, who plays the father of a student on “13 Reasons Why,” told us, “I just hope that the people who are hurting would come forward and try to talk about it … It’s hard, it’s a crazy TV show, but there are some serious issues that are starting to be talked about.”

“13 Reasons Why” was recently renewed for a second season.
