Cipriani literacy gala honors Fareed Zakaria among others

Publishing and literary world elites gathered at Cipriani 42nd Street on Wednesday evening for the Literacy Partners Evening of Readings and Gala Dinner.

The event honored CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, USA Today editor Joanne Lipman, Literacy Partners board member John Josephson and HBO documentary queen Sheila Nevins. Nevins shared a passage from her new book, “You Don’t Look Your Age . . . and Other Fairy Tales,” which recounts her comical face-lift experience.

Zakaria noted that “After listening to Sheila’s reading, I am acutely conscious of what I look like on the big screen behind me,” adding, “I wish I had the CNN makeup department here.”

Actress Jill Kargman read an excerpt from her tome “Sprinkle Glitter on My Grave” and likened her family, the Kopelman clan, to the Addams Family.

Kargman recalled her brother Will Kopelman’s first forays into acting, which included an audition for the family’s favorite ’80s TV show “Miami Vice.”

He auditioned to play Don Johnson’s son on the show and had four callbacks but eventually lost the role.

Guests included Katie Couric, Maurice DuBois, Arie and Coco Kopelman, Alina Cho, Jackie Weld Drake, Peter Brown, Katharine Raymond Hinton and Liz Smith.

The event raised $1 million to further Literacy Partners’ mission to promote family literacy.
