How a bartender became Chance the Rapper’s intern

Not many people get to intern for their idols, but Negele Hospedales did.

After Chance the Rapper tweeted in March that he was looking for an intern, recent college grad Hospedales, a native of Canada, created a cover letter in the form of a website that caught Chance’s eye.

Hospedales, 22, was working as a bartender in Australia when he applied, but his site showed that he had experience with launching YouTube channels and his own Canadian urban culture platform.

He even outlined the Chance the Rapper concerts he’d attended and wrote an essay about a time when he traveled “15 hours to sneak into a Chance the Rapper concert” right before an exam.

Chance had been seeking “someone with experience in putting together decks and writing proposals.”

In a recent blog post titled “Here is how to work for your favorite rapper,” Hospedales reflected on his time as Chance’s intern, writing, “Life can happen as swiftly as your resume goes viral, and since your application happened to do so, about three weeks will pass before your first day on the job.” Not bad for turnaround time.

The intern went on to talk about swanky intern perks like playing basketball with the Migos and Myles Turner and playing a private volleyball game at Bonnaroo.

As for his thoughts on his boss? “What makes him [Chance] such a great person is his understanding that while many of us care to sensationalize the few shreds that we may get from him, he can better use his influence to spread the type of community-boosting positivity and joy that he is so well known for,” Hospedales reflected.

Hospedales did not immediately return our request for comment.
