The Brooklyn stuntwoman who died on the set of “Deadpool 2” was a passionate competitive motorcyclist who blogged about not being scared to crash.
Joi “SJ” Harris – who earned her race license in May 2013 – dished about learning from her mistakes and advised against “skimping on your safety” when it came to buying gear.
“I get back out there and go just as hard as before like nothing ever happened,” Harris wrote in response to the question, “How do you get back out there after a crash?”
On her blog, Harris billed herself as the “first licensed African American woman in US history” to regularly compete in American Motorcyclist Association-sanctioned events.
She also regularly posted photos and videos of herself in action – including one video titled “My 1st Race-Crash EVER!!!” in 2015.
“When it comes to crashing, I’ve learned to accept that I am not the greatest rider that exists and that there is always something to learn when on track and pushing limits,” Harris wrote. “Sometimes I’m going to eat it if I’m impatient. Everything takes time.”
Harris was killed Monday morning in Vancouver while filming a stunt for “Deadpool 2.” Witnesses said she lost control of her bike and smashed through windows of Shaw Tower.
Though a daredevil, Harris took riding safety seriously and urged her followers to invest in their equipment.
“My gear costs what I thought my body parts were worth. Basically, it was an investment,” she wrote on her blog. “INVEST whether you want to just hit the track one time or become a track junkie or a racer, INVEST IN YOUR BODY.”
