Maria Sharapova has been granted a wild card invitation to the US Open — her first Grand Slam event after her 15-month doping ban.
She opened up to Hamptons magazine of the suspension: “As I look back at who I am … and what I’ve achieved, it was definitely sad to think anyone would think I took the easy way out.”
She’s said the drug was for a heart condition.
On the wild card: “Getting back to what I’ve done since I was a young girl just makes me that much happier, being able to be where I feel that I belong.”
