Rosie O’Donnell was behind Kathy Griffin’s Trump photo apology

An unexpected person helped Kathy Griffin realize she needed to apologize for the now-infamous beheaded Donald Trump photo.

In a new interview with The Cut published Sunday, Griffin revealed that Rosie O’Donnell — one of Trump’s most notorious sparring partners — helped convince her to release an apology video after the photo sparked intense backlash from both Republicans and Democrats.

During a phone call between the two women, O’Donnell asked Griffin, “What is James Foley’s mom going to think when she sees this?”

Foley was the American journalist who was beheaded by ISIS in 2014.

In May, the photograph of Griffin holding a severed Trump head went viral. The comedian lost endorsements, scheduled performances and was fired from her job as host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Trump and his family took to Twitter to condemn her and over the course of the last few months, she has received thousands of death threats.

However, she’s done apologizing.

“President Trump just pardoned Joe Arpaio, who was essentially running a concentration camp in the Arizona desert,” she said. “He said there are some good Nazis, and he’s kicking out young adults who were brought here as kids by their parents, and I’m the one who has to continue to apologize?”

Despite saying she didn’t think she would have a career again during a press conference in June, Griffin announced she’s going on a world tour on Sunday. Aptly titled the “Laugh Your Head Off” tour, the promotional video shows the comedian in the same shirt holding up a globe instead of Trump’s head.
